What scope for my new muzzleloader?

I ordered a new Savage .50 muzzleloader and I am going to buy a new scope for it. What features are important in a good muzzleloader scope? What power would likely work the best for me? What about a fixed power scope? I want to buy a good quality scope that can last me for years to come. I don't want to scrimp on the scope.

Bill,

Your best bet would be to find a good quality 3-9 power scope. This is assuming that you will have shot opportunities over 100 yards. If not, a fixed 4 or 6 power scope would be fine too. My muzzleloader currently carries a variable, and when shot opportunities occur at 200 yards, I'm glad to have the extra magnification. I'd look at Leupold or Burris, and if you're not wanting to spend that much look at the Nikon Buckmaster series.

Muzzle loader Scope

I have a Savage Muzzleloader. I put a Leupold VX-2 1x4 scope on it. 4 power is good to 200 yds and I doubt very much you will ever shoot farther. I won't with the muzzloader. Hope your Savage has the accu-trigger in it. They are nice. The rifle also shoots best with 4227 so far. So does a friends Savage. Make sure you get the sabots that the instructions call for. They really do work right.

I really don't expect to have many opportunies for shots much out past 100 yards. What rings and mounts fit the Savage muzzleloader? I notice that the Leupold catalog doesn't list this gun. It came in today so I am eager to get it all put together. I will use the sabots the instructions call for.
