Exclamation Student suspended because his Mom called from Iraq

http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/l...s/11575912.htm

Can you believe this? This kid is talking to his Mom during lunch. His Mom is in Iraq, which as we all know, sometimes folks don't come back from. Some azzhat teacher tells him he can't talk on the phone, the end result is him being suspended for 10 days.

There aren't too many reasons to resort to physical violence, but this is one. If I was the kid or the parent, some one would have been getting a beat down. For a school official to act in such a callous manner just screams for an azz kicking.

These ZERO TOLLERANCE school policies have gone way too far!
This kid deserves a written apology from the entire school board.
Common sense....a word in the dictionary.

Not my favorite organization....wonder if ACLU would like to jump into this?

I think the bigger problem wasn't he phone call, but the students behavior toward the teacher.

Quote:
Punishment for defiance, not call
The punishment for violating that policy is that the phone is confiscated until the end of the day. But Francois was suspended for cursing and being defiant, said Parham. That was extended to 10 because “he did not want to accept the three-day suspension and to agree that he would not use the cell phone openly or curse.”

Parham said, however, that Francois’ behavior at school has been “a chronic problem.”

Of course the school district is going to paint the kid as a bad guy. That is politics 101 nowadays.

PC world has gone insane. Cursing and defiance was met with a bar of soap and a paddle when I was a boy, but we cannot do any corporal punishment now. In Houston the kids are given tickets and then they have to go to criminal court. It's a darn shame when chewing gum or being in the hall without a pass ends up being a misdemeanor criminal record. Midol, aspirin, and any other analgesic drugs could land a kid in court also. The school district I pay taxes in has let teachers exhile students from the class room when they are constantly disruptive, just what the kid wants them to do. We now have "alternitive schools" for those children who cannot follow the basic rules of society without constant supervision or discipline. Without discipline teachers can't teach and student can't learn. We couldn't possibly hurt little Billys' self esteem by making him follow some sort of rules that he doesn't like or respect. It's all become some kind of bizzare joke on the rest of us. Is it any wonder that their parents don't have any courtesy and drive while watching videos and doing their hair and make-up, putting the rest of us at risk.

I feel better now. Thanks for letting me rant a little bit.

The school I just finished my contract at did allow corpral punishment. Most of the schools in Southern Missouri do.
The problem is parenting or the problem is elementary and middle school teachers - I haven't decided - though I suspect it's the parents.
High school students have figured out that they can do anything and get away with it. You throw paper - you get yelled at but it's a big joke. You do something really stupid and all you get is a 3 day suspension - a great opportunity for you to sit there and do nothing. And schools will say that a kid can't be punished too much because then he'll just drop out.

I got pissed off and thought I'd scare some people a couple weeks ago. I started yelling and kicked the trash can clean accross the room. About 1/2 the kids kids had tears in their eyes from fright and the other 1/2 had tears in their eyes from laughing so hard. They know the teacher can't do anything. This starts as kids talk back their parents at age 5 about not eating their vegetables. Back in my day I learned to respect or else I'd be taught respect If you know what I mean

As far as the kid with the phone goes, I have no doubt in my mind that he deserved every one of those 10 days. The worst punishment I've ever seen for a phone is 1 day detention - which is nothing.
The student could be "learning disabled" in which case a 10 day suspention sounds too much.

I suspect the kid was just trash plain and simple. I'm one of the few teachers who take the traditional approach that - you sit down and you be quiet for 9 months, take your F, I'll see you in summer school, I'll give you your D - and if you don't like it you can get the hell out right now and collect welfare like your deadbeat parents. I don't care if you fail - but I care if you prevent others from learning.

All too often teachers think they can help students like this and all it does is give the teacher a big headache.

I think the Teacher should have seriously handled the situation differently. Maybe she could have verified that the kid was talking to his mother in Iraq. I know that cellphones are not permitted in school and I think that teenagers should really have a need for a cellphone. However If the kid was telling the truth and his Mom was in Iraq and that is who he was talking to then I think there should be some previsions made to allow it. COMMON SENSE, exceptions to every rule and all those cliche's.

I also however agree that the kid could have been a little more respectable and offered the teacher a minute on the phone to talk to his mother and verify that is indeed what was going on.

Kids now a days are disrespectful because the parents are disrespectful.
I am really hoping to move out to Montana BEFORE my sone gets into Highschool. He is a good kid right now and I want to keep him that way and some of the schools out in MT are still the "old skewl" way. One school from grade 1-12 and there are only a few hundred kids in each school.

Sounds like the kind of education I want my son to have. It is those kind of schools that also enforce use of common sense.

I first of all believe it is good sense and no such thing as common sense....and you all have to realize there is ADD going on with this young generation now......an excuse?...Heck where I came from, we got the attention getter on the behind and therefore there was no such thing as lack of attention....oh yea..it got our attention....yea for sure we needed some rules for abuse of the little ones....(I had an uncle that used a dog chain on his kids till my mother got hold of him..)....now that is abuse....but we need to bring back the paddle in front of the class..(embarressing)...would do more than hurt the butt..

born to be outdoors....thanks dad
