New Leupold Scopes
Just bought a couple of Leupold scopes for a pair of new rifles. Both were the VX-3 Long Range scopes which are 30 MM tubed scopes. First was a 6.5 X 20 in silver for the Remington 700 VSSF(Varmint synthetic stainless fluted) in 22-250. It really makes an awesome looking rig. Hope it shoots as good as it looks. The Second was a VX-3 4.5 X 14 Long range for a Remington 700 CDL in 300 Win Mag. Haven't gotten the rifle yet but will be delivered tonight I guess. The scope is an awesome looking thing. Wish I had gone to the 30 MM sooner. Really clear scopes. They are kinda expensive scopes but I guess you get what you pay for. Will post a picture or two once I get 'em both set up

suposebly theyre great scopes.
the 4.5-14 is ideal but ive heard nothing but complains on the eye relief on the new 6.5-20. but that goes for the old 6.5-20 two. im getting a 6-18 because of that. let us know what you think of them. ive looked through the 14 power and its suuuuuperb. |

Evan, sure you don't have that the other way around? Never heard that issue with the VX-III's. The 6-18 is a Vari-X II or VX-II and has always been the model with very critical eye relief. The optics are good but that eye relief issue made it tough as a Varmint Gun when you go prone, that's why a traded mine off and went to the X-III. Problem solved.
skeet, you just did what I just did. I strapped a new 4.5-14x40LR X-III with the B&C Reticle on my Weatherby Accumark 7mm STW and I stumbled on an excellent deal for a 8.5-25x50LR for my Accumark 22-250. These scopes are awesome!!

Scopes etc.
Actually the eye relief on the 6.5 x20 is pretty good. I do have a 6X18 and it is a little short as is the relief on the 4X12 I have..in fact it is going to go on ebay I think.(the 4X12 that is). I got the scopes both at wholesale and the 300 Win mag rifle was a gift. The 700 VSSF was a bit pricey though worth it I think. Shot the rifle 4 times to get it sighted after the bore sight. The thing seems to want to shoot. Right out of the box. The 8.5 X25 is an awesome scope even if it is kind of expensive...about 700 wholesale I think. For some reason I let a 700VSSF and the exact same scope go at an auction for 1100 bucks. Shoulda bought it. Rifle is more than 800 bucks. BTW how do ya like the B&C reticle??

skeet, where do you get that scope at holesale. the 8.5-20 is closer to a 900 dollar scope at normal price.
ive done side by side comparision with the old varixIII 6.5-20 and my new vxII 6-18 and the eye relife to me on the 6-18 seems much better and is easier to look through. seemed like i was always moveing my head back and forth with the 20 power trying to get a full feild of veiw. |

Evan, were those scopes you were comparing mounted and in a shooting scenario or just off the shelf side by side? Where the relief is very critical on those X-II's is when you set that rifle up on a by pod or even bench rest. Until you have absolutely perfect alignment the X-II's would go black, there was just very little forgiveness if you weren't perfectly aligned which at times when Varmint shooting can be tough. Just my experience, that's all.
skeet, I never answered your question about the B&C Reticle. I love it! So much that I am going to send my 8.5-25x50 in and have the Varmint Reticle installed.

comparison was made in the feild, shooting from sand bags and bypods. both scopes mounted on ruger #1s made for pretty good comparison, we started out punchn paper then went to hitn jack rabbits. we used sand bags to hit paper and moved to the more flexible bipods to get on the rabbits. well i did alittle bit of both sand bag and bipod rabbit shooting. im getting on leos website to compare the 6.5-20 vxIII 30mm eye relief to the vxII 6-18 1" vxII 6-18x40 target dot has 3.7"- 4.7"s of relief vxIII6.5-20x40 30mm 3.6"- 5" pretty dang close. 6-18 has hair better relief on 18 power than the 20 power does on 20, but then the 20 power is winning the relief on the low end. i havent done a comparison in the feild with the 6.5-20 vxIII 30mm scope to know. but the eye relief numbers may mean its alittle finicky or it may mean it just has a unoticed little exstra releif on the high power. 4.5-14 vxIII 30MM has 4.4-3.6"s of relief. this is another i havent tried in the feild. but is planned to be my next scope purchase. hmmmm just noticed the 14 power is low on relief when compared to the 20 and 18 power glass, i would have thought it would be the other way around. also these numbers mean nothing. it all depends on how the glass feels in the realworld. we could have a scope with 6.5"s of relief but it wont mean beans if you cant see through it without straining or constantly moveing your head back and forth to find the best feild of view that seems to be changeing ever other time you blink your eye. as a hole ive found most all leo scopes to be easy to look through. but the old 6.5-20 wasnt the best of the bunch when compared to my vxIII 4.5-14x40 1" 3-9 x40 vxII and 6-18vxII Last edited by Evan03; 08-25-2005 at 07:22 AM. |

Do you know what the cost of having the Boone & Crockett reticle installed is? I have a 4.5X14 VXIII on my .30-378 Accumark and I think that the B&C reticle would be real nice. Also any idea as to what turn-around time is. Just wondering. Heck I was kicking around the idea of just buying another scope because I want that reticle for that gun. Then I would have an excuse to go looking for a new rifle. A Leupold laying around not mounted???????? That's darn near a crime

Billy, even though you ride a noisy bike, I'll divulge the information you seek.
Leupold performs the service for $149 whether it's a Varmint or B&C reticle. The last time I sent a scope to Leupold was for a broken reticle and it was back on my rifle in 8 days as a warranty repair. I can't say whether they would make that turnaround for a replacement reticle but it wouldn't surprise me. Being on the left coast helped with the expedited shipping too.

premier reticles. wouldnt it be cool to have your rifle zerod at 200yds. a dot at 300yds 400 500 and 600. or even maybe break this down alittle more
zero at 200, first dot at 250, second at 300 and 3rd at 350. or kinda however you wanted them. im not positive they can do a 4th dot. these dots would also be balisticly placed according the load your shooting through your rifle. in my opion far better than any leupold varmit reticl or big game boon and crocket marketing deal. i believe you can also send scopes to leupold and theyl set dots to your rifles load. quite alot of info like altitude. muzzle velocity, and all kinds of other stuff go into setting these dots. but they may just send the scopes to premier reticle. |
