Carbon Tetrachloride
Just opened my first can of Birchwood and Casey Gun Scrubber. If my nose and memory deceive me not, it's carbon tetrachloride. It's not easy to find anymore. I don't suppose it is any nastier than a lot of the solvents we have around, like choke cleaner, and brake cleaner, but it is fairly nasty. One of its interesting properties is that it is one of the few solvents that will dissolve carbon.

Carbon Tet??
I think not..probably 111 trichloroflouroethane...maybe not even that anymore. Carbon tet is considered too deadly anymore. Hard on the environment...and people!

Ahhhhh....I can still smell carbon tet. I remember when fire extinguishers were filled with the stuff. We thought it was harmless.
But then, I'm from the generation that thought nothing of playing with liquid mercury in our bare hands, and had doctors prescribe cigarettes.

Mercury
Sure was fun playing with mercury.
Last Month some kid spilled some at a school here in Michigan. The school was closed for a week to clean it up. The last I heard the room he spilled it in was still closed. I played with it quite a bit. Niting wong wit mi !!!!!!! We used carbon tet quite a bit at the Hooker Chemical plant in Montague. We were always carefull when we blew out a hose that had had it in. The plant ended up being a big SUPER FUND SITE. The whole place is burried in a big lined vault. |

Isn't it funny how things are just fine for 30 or so years and then somebody finds out that they are bad for humans. Take asbestos and cigarettes as examples. They are two of the biggest class action areas in law suits nowadays.
I can remember when thermometers were made using mercury. What would have happened if a kid broke that thing in his/her mouth? Not good.

Carbon Tet huh? I used to use it for cleaning gun barrels before reblueing them, potent stuff. One day I found it had been outlawed in Canada so that ended my use of it. Best wishes.
