Trout

I live in the panhandle of Nebraska and there are a lot of opportunities for trout fishing. My best success comes from little cleo spinners and rat l traps;
What are your favorite lures and rigs for trout?

I haven't been since June. That trip I caught 1 fish, a big rainbow, on a yellow beetle spin.
I went back Sunday (lots of big browns caught in Oct. on the Cumberland tailwaters) and threw a black rooster tail as the water was receding. They went cold on the RT,but the guy next to me was destroying them-he mustv'e caught 100 fish while I was there. He was using yellow and orange Powerbait. He gave me some of it and I started catching them.I caught about 20 rainbows and 1 little brown.I only kept 3 to eat, but I fished 5 hours in the cold rain and had a ball.I have a cold now, but it was worth it.

Mepps are good baits, but they weren't hitting them the past two trips. When my neighbor goes to Rock Creek, all he takes are Mepps or minnows.

Here the green wooleybugger on a flyrod works wonders
spinners, everything gold for clear water and no skirt and silver blades for cloudy water and yellow skirt.
If I could use only one lure and a spin outfit I use the green grasshopper with the orange belly...had a shore lunch of trout just yesterday as a matter of fact...the action of this lure just can't be resisted from bass to gills to trout to steelhead.

Here in West Virginia, on stocked trout a size 12 gold hook, or size 12 treble hook with 1-2 kernels of Jolly Green Giant whole kernel sweet corn slays the trout, but if you're lucky to find a native trout stream, small garden worms, not night crawlers, do a great job

Larry,
Does WV still stock every little ditch, up to a river, that holds water?

I have family in WV and remember when we visited one spring, I couldnt believe some of the small water that was stocked with trout!! Pretty cool.

The little creek my mom grew up on even had some in it. Big Creek, just outside Hamlin, WV.

Andy

I usually fish with 2 poles: one with a worm, eggs or corn and the other is either my fly rod or a spinning rod. For fly-fishing I'll try and match whatever's hatching or flying around. For spinning I'll usually just use a basic spoon or something flashy. I've had decent luck with them all.

Andy, West Virginia still has an avid stocking program and yes they still hit the small streams. When the fed gov closed the hatcheries up there several years ago the state took them over.
they stock fingerlings in some catch and release areas with a chopper and get stock the excess brood trout in the fall. Only problem is they list the stockings on the web and on a phone message so the stock truck followers know where to go. Personally I liked it better when we had trout seasons and fish were stocked in off season and could acclimate but wv dnr says a river is just a big aquarium and the hatcheries do so good they have to cycle these fish quickly. Fortunately I have some areas where the stocked trout move to which are remote and productive and have a couple native brook trout streams I can fish

Andy, just like Rubicon said, they stock alot of small stream, mademade lakes and rivers, however, there was a bill to close trout fishing year round, with Jan-Feb. March to be used as stocking, with April -Dec31, Trout season, that would be great but I haven't seen anything since, it was probably shot down.
Hatchey Trout needs to be in fresh cold water for a week or two to firm up, first stock trout seems mushy. Also I like to get out and walk a stream while I can still do so, in yeats to come I might have to park the truck and crawl down over the bank, as I get older But right now I'd rather walk a while and get away from the crowds Each year I buy my hunting and fishing license, past two years didn't go trout , haven't trout fished any this year, might go native fishing in couple weeks & ramp hunting.
