"Society made me do it"
Trooper Remains In Critical Condition After I-470 Shooting KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri highway trooper remains in critical condition after being shot nine times during a weekend traffic stop. Tommy R. Rollins Jr., 26, of Grandview, is accused of shooting trooper Brandon Brashear after the officer pulled him over in Lee's Summit early Saturday morning. Colleagues of Brashear told KMBC's Bev Chapman that they train to expect the unexpected. "We don't treat any stop as a low-risk stop, because you just never know what's going to happen," said Sgt. John Hotz, with the Missouri Highway Patrol. Officials said Brashear had stopped a motorist on Interstate 470, but the driver jumped from the car and started firing, chasing the trooper into the median. "(Brashear) was doing everything just like he should have at the time of the stop," Hotz said. Rollins told reporters he was temporarily insane when he fired the shots. "I didn't mean to shoot the man. It's like I said, it was temporary insanity -- wasn't even thinking when I did it, that's it," Rollins said. "Didn't mean to do what I did. Society is what caused me to do what I did, and that's all I can tell you." KMBC reported that Rollins was a janitor who worked for the Raytown School District until October 2004. He was reportedly unable to find work since then. Brashear's condition has not changed much since Saturday's shooting. "We're optimistic and hopeful. When you consider the situation, we feel very fortunate," Hotz said. Court records show that Rollins admitted to shooting Brashear and that he led police to the assault weapon used. Rollins was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action. Tommy Rollins article

BULLS**T!
(speakign to offender) you were temp insane right? ok lets see, you had a loaded weapon in the car and ready to use (premeditated), you jumped out and opened fire (assualt) on a gentleman who pulled you over because you were either speeding or had something wrong with your car. as a matter of fact, it might nto be too hard to present the case, that with the obviously preplanned use of the weapon involved, that he might have gotten pulled over on purpose simply to do that to an officer, possibly as a gang/drug related initiation. they should be trying you for at the very least attempted murder, if the officer lives, and murder 1 if he doesn't. screw life in prison, your life should be mesured by the same means you chose, in millimeters. |

Just which assault weapon? Most assault weapons are just a bit awkward to bring into play from a cae or even in trying to get out of the car, unless you have it in such a manner as to make it readily accessable, like it's sitting on your lap with the muzzle pointed at the door. I think I have to agree with Gumpokc that there was no temporary insanity. Introduce the bum to "Ol' Sparky". Paul B. |

Some ACLU turd will pull it off for this piece of dung.
Or some other group who is perminantly insane, (kinda like the PETA folks),will prove (to a very stupid jury) that he was a tempoary nut bar, because it was societys fault.

Normally, people that are temporarily insane have a reason for the temporary insanity. The fact that he is saying that so soon after the shooting means that he has already thought about it. Being able to think about it kind of goes against the temporary insanity defense.
I would love to know what this guy's motive was other than sheer stupidity. LEO's have a tough life and people like me criticize them a lot, but things like this should never happen. While I scrutinize LEO's actions under a microscope because they have the power to take life and there are very broad laws to prevent them from being held accountable for it, I think LEO's should always have back up on traffic stops and they should approach the driver with their hand on the gun and ready for action. Protecting everybody's civil rights and LEO's is tough but we have to do something about this in today's society. Of course, protecting LEO's and requiring backup on traffic stops means that we would have to pay more taxes and nobody wants that.

In case my feeling didn't come across right, if found to be guilty this guy should die quickly. What kills me is the sniper defendants now being tried here in Montgomery County, Maryland. I went to the Courthouse the other day and there were cameras everywhere. Must have been a hearing about them. They were found guilty in Virginia, the Supreme Court outlawed the death penalty for people under 18 years of age as cruel and unusual punishment, and now they are trying them here as extra security that they don't get off in Virgina on a technicality. While I believe in letting 9 out of 10 guilty men go free in lieu of finding one innocent man guilty, enough is enough here. Plenty of guilty people escape the system every day because LEO's have no leads and there are just way too many people in this world to keep track of everybody. Life must be completely different in the small towns where everybody knows everybody.
