Grandfather charged for taking pornographic photos of toddler
Drugstore clerk found sexually explicit pictures of 2-year-old in self-serve photo kiosk

MANCHESTER, N.H. - A man was arrested on child porn charges after he brought sexually explicit pictures of his 2-year-old granddaughter to a drugstore to have prints made and a clerk saw the images stored electronically in the machine he used, police said.

Fearing the girl was in danger and not knowing her identity, police released photos of the toddler. Her father saw the pictures Wednesday on national television and called authorities, according to an affidavit filed in Manchester District Court.

The grandfather, Richard Hawes, 63, of New Boston, was being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Photos taken during family visit
The girl and her family live in Florida. Hawes apparently took the photos of his granddaughter during a visit to Florida this spring, police said. The affidavit said Hawes admitted during a police interview that he had taken the photos with his digital camera.

Police said they were led to Hawes by a clerk at a CVS drugstore in Manchester. Hawes came to the store to print the photos from his digital camera, police said. The clerk found the photos when she went to clear a backlog of digital images from the store's self-serve photo kiosk.

The girl was being cared for by authorities in Florida early Thursday. A call to the Department of Children & Families was not immediately returned.

Okay, I agree that the man should be thrown in jail, if not castrated, but why are the authorities in Florida taking care of the kid? This man was the grandfather, not the father, and the father of the girl was the one that turned the guy in. I just don't understand society. Now, if they were suspicious of the parents, fine, then they should keep the girl until everything is ironed out. First off, I would kick the crap out of my father or father in-law if they did something like that and then I would kick the crap out of the authorities for taking my child away from me without any suspicion of improper behavior on my part.

I have to wonder what "sexually explicit" means. We probably have photos of our kids taking their first bath together (my wife takes pictures of everything) cuz "it was so cute". Does that make us porno freaks? Probably in the eyes of some. I really don't like where society is heading.

Sexually Explicit means just that. Bath photos are not Sexually Explicit, they are not "porno".

Some of the photos in the batch were typical family fare. But police said other pictures showed the girl "positioned and posed in sexually explicit ways." The clerk later identified the man from a store surveillance camera and police say the man is Hawes.

A police affidavit released Thursday said Hawes admitted taking the photos with a digital camera after becoming "fascinated" by his granddaughter's genitals when giving her a bath.

Officers said Hawes twice tried to print the photos in New Hampshire using self-service kiosks in CVS drugstores. The first time, in Nashua, he fled after realizing the photos were printing behind a counter.

The second time he printed the sexually explicit photos — along with typical family photos of the girl — at the CVS in Manchester, police said.

In Florida, a spokesman for the Seminole County Sheriff's Office outside Orlando said Hawes could face charges of capital sexual battery, lewd and lascivious molestation, and sexual performance on a minor.
