1891 Argentine

I got a call today from a gun shop that just got in a few surplus arms. The crown jewel was an 1891 Argentine Mauser in 7.65x53mm. I asked the clerk if it was original and it is, and the numbers match and the wood is great. I asked what the hang tag said and it is priced at $110. I told him I would take it for $100 (the stock and action are worth that much) and he agreed.

I paid $16.88 for an 1891 back on Thursday, June 16, 1960 and $150 for another one in 1990. I pick her up tomorrow. If I fall out of favor with the rifle, it makes great trading material. All the best...

This rifle cleaned up to about excellent condition. What appeared to be rust in the bore was really dried cosmoline. The numbers match, the stock has the original cartouches and the rifle serial number. Even the cleaning rod matches.

At the range the battle sight shot high at 100 yards and I expected that. This rifle may get a higher front sight.

Is anyone else shooting a 7.65x53mm?

All the best...

I've been looking at an Argentine 1891 Carbine that is a jewel, for $250.00. I don't know if I really want to start loding another round, but I've always loved those rifles.

I killed a deer with one when I was 14,a lung shot and he was DRT, (dead right there). Fairly mild recoil and a good size bullet, perfect deer rifle.

If I saw an 1891 carbine that was a real jewel at a decent price, it would go home with me. All the best...
