Weekend Sihlouette Shoot.

There was a shoot going on at the local gun range, so I staggered up there to check it out. Im not sure how the rules stack up, if they are national level rules or just a local get to together and have fun shoot...

Anyways, there were 4 shooting benches, starting at 100 yards, you moved left and ended shooting at 400 yards. At each bench you had 5 shots for 5 steel targets. 100 saw praire dog heads, 200 saw praire dogs, 300 was jack rabbits, and 400 yards there were Marmots.

I showed up a little late and was on the bottom of the list, which was a benefit to me as I was new to this idea of shooting with rules... Heck, I just shoot praire dogs!

The rifle of choice was my .22-250, Ruger M77 MkII Target. I was placed in unlimited class, I think I could have met the .670 muzzle diameter to shoot Hunter class if I turned my scope down, but I was too late to make that happen.

I shot a clean 100 yard stage. Moved out to 200, and I missed the 2 and 3 targets. Same deal at 300. I was getting a little down on myself and knew I had to make all 5 at 400 to make AAA class. When I got settled in on the bench the winds had settled down to a steady breeze coming almost straight at me, with a small deflection. I had over the 22 inches I prediced the bullet to fall and laid the center post on the marmots right edge and let fly.

Dead center. Winds stayed calm, so I repeated my actions. Hit again. No change in winds, so I kept holding and shooting, dead center hits every time... a clean stage at 400 yards. Only one other guy managed the feat at 400 yards, and he shot Master class. I was massivly stoked to be able to shoot that fine.

It was pretty fun, as it was just the qualifyer I have to hit the next match for ranking. Im afraid Ill be gone however... I was still very pleased with my results, my load and my gun.

Im hooked... shooting steel is about the best replacement for live varmint kong.

I loved shooting 100y handgun/rimfire.

Are there some targets that seem harder to hit than a different target at a different range? I remember that 75y Turkeys seemed way more difficult than the 100y Rams.

The Jackrabbits seemed the hardest for me... their skinny little backs made a smaller margin of error, you couldnt hold for a wide part and slop one in...
