rifle report, ruger #1vt 220 ;) :) :) ;)

nothing but big grins here.

after all my yiberin and jaberin about being done with buying rifles forawhile, what do i do???????? turned right around and picked up a new in box #1 in a 220vt.

rifle is beatuful, trigger breaks at a heavy 3.5lbs. did i mention its beatiful??? barrel is 26"s and ill call it meduim taper vt. not near as heavy as alot of bolt action tubes most manufactures put out. wood is walnut and has alittle grainy quality.

but the grain isnt what im concerned with(though i did pick it out of 4). itl be beat to a pulp and lookin like a true redkneck rig in less than 6 months.

initial site in went well. with the new 6-18 leo vt vx II lr target dot. took all of 4 shots to be putn 55s 1" high at 100. this is were i find scope adjustments are as good as youd espect. this is the first scope that i havent tapped on after makeing scope adjustments. and acording to 1" blocks on my targets. when i click it 8"s left it moves 8"s and no more.

ammo pushed through the rifle so far has all been factory fodder. mostly hornady vmaxes, 50 and 55s acouple other oddbll stuff that i cant think of off hand because it didnt shoot that great.

55s were what i thought i was gona lean on hornady advertises alittle over 3600fps with this ammo. althought the 55s shot remarkable well for an out of the box untouched rifle. id had decide against them due to the rifles tastes.

this again is kinda were i also tend to not due to me wanting to, lean agaisnt the mold so to speak. 220s are known for shooting 55s. thats not the case here.

i pushed agroup through with the 50s. youd of had to of seen it my draw dropped i think i was seeing stars. i kept telling myself man have i wasted alot of time in not tring one of these rifles sooner.

ive long quit shooting keyboard groups, so well just say the groups are remarkable. not just one group all and every 50 horn load evertime if pushed em into paper. truly amazeing.

another thing worth mentioning. though these 50s arent going enough faster than the same 50s pushed through my 22/250, the groups are somehow staying tight in our gusty idaho winds. i almost thought that the wind was helping me and pushing the groups tighter. not so.

though the groups are tight in 10-20mph winds the calm is where she signs.

all i know is im tiggled to no end with this rifle. so much more so than with any vt rifle ive tried yet. even the rem vs sf 22/250 didnt get me going like this. this rifles just screams even. and heck for idaho the caliber might just be perfect.

the rifle has farily large list of kills in its short life with me. nothing taken at under 200yds. 2 coyotes at a paced 300ish. lost count at 300 yotes were alittle farther but not far enough farther to say more than 300.

and more than 30 jackrabbits from 200 farther than i care to pace.

so there you have it im now a true redkneck gun nut thats fallen for the #1 and 220swift.

Evan

ps.

the 22/250 ruger vt tang is also sporting a new target dot. and doing almost as good. shooting 50s as well

also the target dot has opend up a hole new world, dont think i can ever go back to the one i was living in. you just have to try it. seeing that dot inside a 1" circle at 100yds is amazeing and im im sure is helping my acuracy alittle bit.

more rabbit snipn.

ended up getn a set of low rings to get the scope lower. got it mounted and bore sited the old fashioned way by lookin through the barrel.

3 shots and she was shootn 50s 1" high at 100. still lovn the leo 6-18 dot with target knobs.

this rifle is shootin so true that anything inside 300 is a givin. bipod is mounted and rabbits have been falln at a rate of 10-12 every evening out. i actualy dont think ive missed a shot on anything inside 300.

rifle now has about 140rds through it. groups are getn tighter and cleaning has only been getn done around every 20-30rds

also the action seems to be breakn in and getn smoother.

ive been savn brass to maybe reload. but the way its snootin im kinda doubtn itl happen anytime soon.

Evan,
Glad to hear your so happy with your new .220. The only thing I would have done different is the dot ratical. I used one years ago to squirrel hunt with and would lose the dot in low lite. For that reason I usually get the duplet cross hairs, they also help with long range shooting where your lobeing the bullets in. I`m going to try to make it out this winter so don`t beat the gun up to bad untill I get to see it.

ive got nothing but good to say about the target dot.

low light conditions arent real awful bad, ive takn shots more than 30 minutes after sunset. last nights 380 shot was after sunset. and it was pretty well pitch black by the time i walked back from checkn out the results.

i may put a dot in the 4.5-14, thats on the 2506. but it will be alittle bigger. but smaller than the leo duplex that ive pretty much grown to dislike.

that reticle isnt me, at long range it completly covers jack rabbits, most of coyote, rock chucks. birds.

ive takn so many one shot kills on rabbits because im not guesn were the rabbit is behind the reticle. ive yet to have the dot cover a target.

the leo fine duplex might be a better hunting reticle for me. not sure. a dot will cost me about 60 bucks plus shipping.

ohhhhhhhh the 220 is already showing some some of stress. stocks got some dings and there already some blueing rubn off. scope is even alittle marred up.

what would you exspect though ; ) if im gona test a rifle im gona do it good.

Evan

ps. either this rifle just shoots good or the 220 is a acurate very versatile caliber.

right now where shes sited in i can grab 50s 55s or 60s and hit targets to 300yds.

55s and 60s are shootn bought 2.5" high at 100. 50s 1" high but even though the drastic 1.5" point of impact difrence. all seem to kill to 300 with dead on center masshold on smallish argets.

acuracy goes 50s best, 55s second and 60s last. but even the 60s shoot good enough to hit consistent at 100 and hit targets to 300 easily. all ammo has been used to 300yds.

now its just a matter of how long the barrel lasts. this rifle is planned to be a 25wsm and is the main reason the 220 was easy for me to decide on. suposebly a barrel burner. well see if i get my rifle built in 5 years or less. and yes im keepn track of rounds fired.

conciderd hard to get the 22/250 in the same rifle but dicided on the 220 and its 26" barrel and because it was so acurate in my bolt action ruger vt.

so far it just seems to be great western varmit round and rifle.

evan you make me feel a little more normal with this new gun that shoots well -- from where i am from a lot of people brag on how well their gun shoots and me -- well i have never owned a gun that make holes that touched EVERY time until a few weeks ago - now my wife thinks im a little weird even obsessed over the new gun - but sometimes i dont think people really know how hard it is to come by a gun like this - it felt good to read your post about your new gun and im gonna show it to my wife so she will not look at me so weird and make comments about the new addition to the family-- now i am gonna hit the hay -------just as soon as i put it in the safe and kiss it good night LOL

i know now that it out shoots me by quite alot, had a freind of mine shoot it from my sand bags. pushn 50gr v"""""""""""s

this guy is big time #1 nut. his are all acurized and tricked out with single set triggers a tuners this and that.

i told him how mine shoots and i think he thought i was blufn. i told him i wanted him to shoot it. well he did and the results improved.

his rifles are #1Bs standerd. this rifle is v with a few difrences than standerd.

hes now looking into getn v model. my out of box v model prints tighter than his with a trigger tuner tinkerin this and that. and his shoots good.

but ill say that my groups while shooting my rifle arent quite as good as his shooting his rifle.

im off to punch paper with the 300 for a few. elk seasons comeing you know. thats sure to have negative affect on the smaller cals groups
