traded off the 300win for a 3006

after a few times at the range and doing some minor varmiting with the 300win i decided it wasnt my style of rifle.

i knnew the gunshop in town had 3006 in a ruger m77 mkII, stainless Ibeam synthetic stock. ive actualy had two of these rifles identical to this in the past. and liked them alot. they shot well and recoil is alittle less than the 300win in package that weighs a pound less.

the 3006 is already getn revamped, ive never cared for rugers shiny stanless action and barrel and always wanted to sand blast the shine away.

thats what ive been doing this evening. action barrel rings and bolt handle are all a dull egshel lookin almost grey. i sandblasted then rubbed everything down with triple ought steel well to close the pores so finger oils and dirt dont stick to the finish so bad.

finish looks good. almost like cooper rifles eggshel finish but more grey. the action, floor plate and bolt are all in the dishwasher. lol thats right im washing it in the dishwasher. but i also hit it with the pressure washer before tosin it all in the dishwasher.

ounce the washers done running ill yank the bolt apart and scrub out the bore. then toss the rings and the 3-9 lupy on it. and shes good to go to do some paper plinking and varmiting.

ill try and get some pics of the finished product.

later
Evan

ps. ill do some stoneing on the trigger to before it all goes together. get it down to 3lbs or so.

i did the opposite. i traded off my 280 and moved up to a tikka T3 lite 300win mag. the gun shoots awsome. 3" groups @200yds (and not from a bench).i had the same modle ruger as your 06'.

i thought you'd be right evan but the gun's kick is surprisingly mild. not much more than the 280.. maby 5% more. good trade off for the extra punch at the other end. i don't know what tikka did but it works great.

Evan,
You traded a 300 Win for a 30-06? My suspicions have been realized. You are nuts.

Andy

You've obviously had experience with the M77 '06 already. I would never part with mine. It's my "go-to" gun in a big way! I had the trigger done way back when to a nice 2.5# pull. I also installed a Hogue Overmolded, full bed stock and it shoots the Federal Premium 165gr Sierra Game King at a consistant 1/2", 3 shot group off the bench. My tightest was .46"!

I'm with you on the shine thing though! Mine has sported a piece of camo cloth tape for several years along the barrel. It finally fraying so much that I have decided to do what you did and that's blast it. What grade of sand did you use?

I'm currently eyeballing another M77 MkII in 300 Win Mag. It is identical to how my '06 started out being stainless and having the laminated stock. I just can't bear the thought of taking my drop-dead gorgeous Colt-Sauer 300 Win Mag into the field. Other than being a Gunsafe Jewel, I'm not sure why I bought it! The Ruger's been on my dealers shelf for a few months now sporting a cheezy and cheap Bushnell scope and it's traditional shiny stainless finish. I'm looking to do the exact mod's to it as my '06 and hope it shoots half as well after I top it with a nice VX-III.

Get some Pics posted of that finish work, I'm really dieing to see it before I do mine!
