I can't think of any hobbies that I would consider are better than those dealing with guns or hunting. If you passed your Hunter's safety and are responsible enough to have a firearm, I don't see what the problem is. You need to find someone who has the hunting passion and see if you can hang with him or her for a hunting season until you get your feet under you.

As much as I understand your problem, I also understand your mom's concern. I don't advocate disobeying your parents, even though I did cycling against my mom's wishes, but my dad was completely backing me on that one.
Find a reputable hunter that you know and have him/her speak to your mother about hunting. Maybe he/she can offer to take you hunting with them and that will make your mother feel more at ease. I don't blame her for worrying about your safety, and she is definitely worried about your safety in this instance because guns are an unknown for her. Most people that don't know anything about guns are always scared of them. However, we allow people to drive cars without thinking twice about it and more people are killed in the US in car accidents than gun accidents.

Any uncles or fathers of friends maybe? My mom was the same way. Once I turned 19 she didn't have as much pull in my decisions. I never shot a rifle until I was 19. I'm now 35 and she still worries about my bro and me. She always will and so will yours. You will probably never find a way for her to feel safe with your hunting. You have to prove youself always. Hunter safety is the first step. I don't mean to bring you down, but some people never feel good about firearms. Good luck with your situation.

I believe some people are born hunters. Some other people have the ability, and given the opportunity, become a hunter. Me and BOTH my brothers were conceived on my fathers last tryst with my mom before leaving to go to deer camp for a week. It sort of goes without saying that we are all hunters.
You seem young to me. Give it some time. You'll always be able to hunt as an adult. Look for local people willing to take you hunting with them, IF your mom will allow that. I have many hobbies... but they all come to a screeching halt when it gets to be this time of year and the deer start calling me... There are birds to be hunted as well. but it's the deer that really get my blood up. Good luck. Jabba

Unlike Jabba, the birds get my blood going and the deer are just a pass time and a nuisance.
I was looking to see if you were around me, because I would readily meet with your mother and offer to take you hunting. However, you are in Tennessee. You should see if anybody on the board lives near you in Tennessee and see if they are willing to take you out hunting.

I like hunting upland birds Fabs. I might like hunting water fowl too, but I have never been with anyone that was any good at it, so my success has been pretty limited. I like to grouse hunt too... but have not had a lot of success there either. I am gonna try it again this year though. I think if I can kill one... the dog will click.

What we need is a Mentor program. First would be talking to the parents and laying out a good ground work. In Wis. we have several of these programs and seem to work well.

I wish we had a program like that in Maryland.
