wolf shotshells

Have any of you duck busters tried Wolf steel shot? They are not as pricey as some of the other brands but I hope to get some opinions before I give them a try.

Wolf Ammo

In the imortal words of a frenchman...Wolf is Le Junk..Not even spelled like high class junk.(junque). Seriously..even the promotional steel sold by Remington and Federal is better than the wolf stuff. My opinion only!! but I have shot a bit of most every kind of steel. It all sucks in my opinion but some more than others. I shot more than 50 geese and about the same in ducks last year and mostly used hevi shot and a couple of boxes of steel for decoying geese. Use the good stuff.

Wolf ammo, all around, is rather cheap. I buy the 7.62x39 and 9mm rounds buy the 1,000 for plinking around. However, I sure wouldn't use that stuff for hunting or home defense.

I seriously doubt I would use Wolf Steel Shotshells, and I generally believe in "You get what you pay for."

If you're accustomed to paying for Hevi-Shot I think you're wasting your time considering that cheezy ammo. If anything, try shooting the Kent Fasteel loads. For decoying birds the 12ga 2.75" 1-1/16oz #3 works great or perhaps the 3", 1-1/4oz, #2 load. We pay about 8.75 for a box locally.

$8.75 a box for steel is pretty good. The last time I bought that stuff, I was paying about $18 for a box of Remington Nitro steel in 3 1/2" 12 gauge.

Of course, the Hevi-Shot stuff costs a significant amount more, but I love it. I still cannot believe the mallard hen that I shot at 50 yards straight up 2 years ago and she dropped like a brick with Hevi-Shot.

Also, I patterned Hevi-Shot and it patterns much better than steel, if you can believe that.

Kent here is about ten bucks a box. I was just looking for something a little cheaper than Hevi for sea ducks. We usually end up killing a box or more of shells each a day sea duckin. I wont swear weather it is the shells, the shooters, or the motion of the ocean but I really believe some of those scoters that fly by are laughing at us. We still have a great day though.---and--- our sea duck season is in-boat is full of gas- but the ducks are still lollygaging around somewhere up north.

Sea Ducks

Hey Rubicon...Get some of the Wolf steel loads in # 4 or #3 just for shooting cripples. For the real shooting use the Kent or Federal stuff. Sea ducks take a bunch of killing and I would use (smallest) #1 anf back it up with BB size. Especially for the scoters. Scoters are down on the lower chesapeake right now..not in big numbers yet either Was out fishing at the mouth of Eastern Bay and saw a small group of Old Squaws(politically incorrect longtailed ducks ) Plenty of grease monkeys(Cormorants) but no diving ducks yet...another month for them. Personally I wouldn't waste hevi shot on sea ducks. You have to forgive Tree Doc...he doesn't have to shoot tough ducks or real geese...so he only has to use steel!! hehe

Skeet,

If I'm not mistaken, TreeDoc shoots Hevi-Shot for the most part of his hunting. Then again, I could be wrong.

Yes, I reload and shoot Hevi-Shot. Occasionally, I have been known to actually hit and kill a duck or goose. My best shooting is when I'm clad in my pink tutu which isn't too cold to wear in the early season out here but boy do I get chicken skin by the time late December and January roll around.

Last year I launched more Fasteel than Hevi-Shot only because my hunting situation changed a bit. Last season was the first year for me in a rice blind. Shooting is generally at decoying birds so they're in closer within the limitations of steel shot. The Geese get the Hevi primarily because they are all passing shots, they don't want in like the ducks do. Before last season when my hunting was on a different, what I would call "semi-private" land, the shots tended to be pretty consistant "pass" shots and my connection was much better with the Hevi-Shot.

I've had really good luck shooting 2 3/4" Winchester Xpert 2's when hunting mallards/Gadwalls in the marsh, and Bluebill/Redheads in the big blinds. Shooting a Briley LM choke. Good kills out to 35 or so yards. Any further is pushing it w/ that choke really. In my gun anyway.
