My neighboor came over with a die to reload some 270 WSM. He had a mix of nickel and brass cases. He thought they were all trimmed the same. After loading a few we found all the nickel cases will load great into his gun but none of the brass will. I coated the bullet with dry erase marker then tried to chamber them and it looks like they are hitting on the shoulder where it starts to taper to the neck. By measuring with a caliper they appear very very close but they will not chamber.
Any suggestions Please ![]() |

If the CASE shoulder is touching you need to set the shoulder back.
Are you neck or full lenght sizeing? If full sizeing did you turn the die down to touch the shell holder with the ram at TDC and then add 1/8 or so more turn to it? The expander ball could also be part of the problem. Have you lubed the insides of the case neck? the ball may be dragging and pulling the shoulder out after it`s been resized.

i think ol' joe has it nailed with the thought of the datum line being too high. move the shoulder back until the action closes on the sized case.

Sorry for the lack of info was in a rush.
They are once fired brass from that same rifle. I did set the die up to instructions of touch plus 1/8 turn. It is a RCBS full length die set. I dont think he lubed the inside of the neck. It didnt look like he was having to try hard to get the cases in and out. How hard does it need to drag to pull the shoulder out? Also from the dry erase marks it looks like it is hitting where the case starts to taper from the full case diameter not where the neck begins to hold the bullet. ![]() |

okay, now go back to the dry erase marker and color the neck all the way down to the neck shoulder juncture, run the casing all the way into the die, keep movimg the die down until you get to the neck shoulder juncture. you will see the marking start to disapper as you get lower on the casing.
now put the sized case in the chamber, does it close easily? if not extract the casing place it back in the shell holder and turn the die 1/8 turn and try the casing in the chamber again. keep doing this till the action closes without force. there should be some resistance. good luck.

I hope I got it.
I had him bring me 3 cases of each nickel and brass. I took apart his dies and cleaned them up real well. Then sized the 6 cases the brass grew much more than the nickel. I trimmed up all six to 0.010" below max and then tried them. All six empty cases cycled ok. Now I will need to pull the bullets on the other cases and see what they are at. Hopefully the problem is solved |
