Gun Industry Protection Bill Passes!

Yee haw! The US House just did it.

Story from AP:

WASHINGTON - Congress gave the gun lobby its top legislative priority Thursday, passing a bill that would protect the firearms industry from massive lawsuits brought by crime victims. The White House says President Bush will sign it into law.

The House voted 283-144 to send the bill to the president after supporters, led by the National Rifle Association, proclaimed it vital to protect the industry from being bankrupted by huge jury awards. Opponents, waging a tough battle against growing public support for the legislation, called it proof of the gun lobby’s power over the Republican-controlled Congress.

Under the measure, about 20 pending lawsuits by local governments against the industry would be dismissed. The Senate passed the bill in July.

This is a step in the right direction. In a time when the current R- leadership is facing criticism for not being staunch enough, it's good to see them stand their ground on this.

I also read that the House passed a bill doing away with the obesity law suits against fast food restaurants. It is about time that people are held accountable for their own actions.

I am surprised that victims of drunk drivers aren't suing the beer, wine, and liquor industries. That is about the same thing as suing a firearm manufacturer for making a gun that is used by a criminal.

Finally, we are getting some good laws passed. Now, with a little tort reform, things might get a little sensible.

even gun nuts don't know how small the gun industry really is. The sales of all gun manufacturers combined would not make a top 500 company.
What the anti gunners could not do at the ballot box, they have tried to accomplish with activist judges. I am heartned to see some sensible legislation for a change. Congress needs to recognize that they are the counterbalance to a judiciary run amok.
