Super Bowl commercials

Sorry about all the threads but I gotta get my post count up

Anyway, is it just me or has the quality of the Super Bowl commercials gone down in the last few years. The commercials used to be half the reason to watch the game. Now, they just suck. I know I'm not the only one to notice this.

Its hard for me to say, since I have not watched a Super Bowl in probably 25 years now. Way too much hype, and from what they say afterwards, not that good of a football game.

Most of the ones tonight slurped. There were only one or two good ones. My favorite was the Fedex one (even though they showed men and dinosaurs alive together - about a ten million year error).

I think my favorite was the Bud commercial with the Clydesdale pony pulling the wagon with a little help. I like the Fed Ex one too, though.

My favorite, by far, was the Bud commercial with the pony pulling the wagon with the help of his parents pushing from behind. That was one to touch the heart. The runner up, a far way behind, was the FedEx commercial. Other than those two, I don't know if I could pick a 3rd place. That is how bad they were this year. My wife usually watches the Super Bowl with me just for the commercials and she was seriously disappointed with them this year, and even mentioned it to me several times.

At the end of the day, I am starting to get seriously disappointed with the NFL and most other sports. Even tonight, there were a couple of controversial calls. I kind of agree with the call in the end zone for pass interference wherein the Seatle receiver pushed off. However, I am not too sure that Rotheslberger made that first touchdown, but the replay wasn't too clear either. Why can't they put something on the ball with some sensors on the goal line that can determine when the ball crosses the line. In essence, making the entire goal line light up. The holding call against Seatle when they made a pass to the Steelers one yard line was also a little controversy.

Anyway, I am happy that the Steelers won and that Bettis and Cowher got their rings.

I'm with you, Fabs, on that TD call: I don't think he made it in. My wife and I fought about that call every time out, commercial and any other break in play for the rest of the game. I was rooting for the Steelers but I'd rather they won legitimately. I heard that in Soccer they put sensors in the ball that would send a signal when/if the ball went into the goal and I don't think that's too far off for the NFL.

The commercials were a step up from the last couple of years, but not anything astounding. I'd say after the little clydesdale, and the caveman commercial, I liked the bud commercial with the bear. I'm pretty much fed up with the replay system. Some of the plays aren't reviewable, and some of the rules make no sense whatsoever (like the tuck rule). It's also sad to see the halftime shows are featuring geriatrics and a collage of dilluted new artists (see last year's show).

They won legitimate. The calls tonight were not bad, compared to other games. The TD call could not have been made any other way. Even if you do not like the TD there is no way you could say beyond doubt the ball did not cross the beginning of the white. But if you take that out, they still won. Seattle could move the ball, but they could not seal the deal. The holding call was a little iffy, IMHO, but we did not see every angle.

No one will ever be happy with all the calls. With replay, or sensors, or triple play, or even 3-d computer assited holographic imaging. The officials making the calls are still human. It's part of football. I wouldn't have it any other way. God help me for quoting a Tom Cruise movie but, "No, no, he didn't slam into you, he didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you...he RUBBED you. And rubbin, son, is racin'."

I actually thought it was a pretty good game all in all. I started watching it for the commercials and stayed for the football.

As to the Steelers TD, you guys are seeing the problem with all the instant replay shots. Sometimes its going to be a bit hazy and that's when the call on the field stands. Nothing wrong with that at all.

The commercials were OK.

The game was OK.

But the "entertainment" was gruesome. Just plain awful describes it best. I finally realized that it was Super Bowl XL - and maybe that's why the songs were 40 years old.

The worst was the National Anthem. Why these idiotic performers think they have to make it an entertainment performance I cannot understand. IT ISN'T A POP TUNE, FATHEADS! It's supposed to be sung with pride, patriotism and solemnity, not wailed and yodelled and bastardized. The anthem is supposed to bring a swell to your chest and a tear to your eye, not a pang and a sneer. More reason - not that any more was needed - that celebrities and performers are scum.

I guess I worded my response wrong. I just meant that I disagreed with the call that Rothlesberger's TD was good. I know that the refs are the ones who made the call but the game just seemed a little tainted to me after that. There were a couple other calls that I disagreed with but that one really got me. In my opinion the ball never crossed the plane. You guys are right in that the refs made the call but I still feel it was a bad call.

Yeah, the call on the TD was a tough one and we will never really know the right answer because even through instant replay you cannot tell for sure. You cannot see exactly where the ball was placed in Rothlesberger's arm, and as Hawkeye said, there has to be convincing evidence in the replay to overturn the call on the field, and there just wasn't. I spent half an hour trying to explain that to my wife.

Exactly how the game would have played out if the Steelers didn't get that touchdown, we will never know. The Seahawks might not have felt as much pressure to move the ball if the score was 3-0 at halftime. They might not have made any mistakes. According to the announcers on the Steelers sidelines, the Steelers were really down in the dumps before that touchdown.

I forgot about the Bud grizzly commercial and the streaking sheep. Those were pretty good too.

The halftime show was a little dull, but I think that is what the NFL is looking for after the wardrobe "malfunction" from a couple of years ago. Heck, last year they had Paul McCaurtney for the halftime show.

I'm just glad that this football season is over, and I am dying to see if there are any changes to the rules during the off season. They really need to do something about the rules.

Even being a Steelers fan through some bad years I have to wonder about that TD. I too dont have a lot of faith in the play reviews. How about the Indy game when they took the interception away from Troy after review then came back the following day and said they were wrtong and it was a ligitimate interception?
