Can I use 38 special in a gun thats 38 super?

Hi, just looking at the STI Edge and notice its 38 super, but there are no factory loads for that, but there is 38 special, and I like shooting the 38 special guns, they are enough power to be scored major, but has less recoil then the 40.

Thanks.

See Bulletpusher's answer
They are totally different cartidges.
The 38 Special is extremely common- and it's chambered almost exclusively in revolvers.
38 Super ammo is still made, although it's far less common- and it's chambered almost exclusively in semi autos.

where can I find 38 super then?
The local places dont have much brass even, and want 80 bucks for 100. and then bullets are 60 bucks for 200, so with powder I am well over a dollar a round.
And I cant find factory rounds anywhere?

Try these

These are just 2 sites I know of. I'm sure there are plenty more out there. Good luck.

Guys! Guys! Guys!

Xride is in CANADA .

You know, that big chunk of NA just north of the United States, which is very much anti gun owner, especially pistols!

Sorry for your predicament Xride. You might try to get some on your next trip to the States (if ever) or you'll just have to bite the bullet (no pun intended).

I have a friend on Vancouver Island, and hear about the gun BS all the time. He had to borrow a rifle to shoot an injured bear in his yard last fall. Of course the guy he borrowed it from also had the License for bear and just waited for the phone call. It had a broken leg, and probably fell out of an Arbutus tree while after berries. He took ALL of his guns to friends in the States when the last registration fiasco started.

I would think reoading is your answer if you are allowed. Starline Brass is about the best, most guys down here that shoot IPSC with 38 Super are using the West Coast copper plated lead bullets which are very reasonably priced...at least for us here.

Yes, but the STI Edge is built as a LIMITED gun. It has no compensator and isn't set up for optics. It was built as a platform for .40 SW.

In IPSC or USPSA he can have a .38 Super, but it is automatically scored MINOR since it is smaller than the .40 needed to be scored Major power factor.

The .40 in the Edge is pretty soft. About like shooting a 9mm in a smaller polymer gun. Despite the Edge being lighter than a standard 1911, the weight is distributed better and that makes a difference in perceived recoil.

You can always tame it down further with a tungsten guide rod and/or barrel sleeve.
