Curt Gowdy

Passed away today. Back in the days, he hosted about the only outdoor show on Television, "American Sportsman" I think it was called. He was also a great sports announcer.

I saw a document on him many years ago and it really impressed me, he grew up in rural Wyoming, enjoyed the outdoors and lived his dream job.

He was Big Medicine to me when I was a kid growing up with 2 TV stations.

I lived for the show as a kid. It was the stuff of dreams for me.

I don't know about his personal life, but I consider his professional life perfect.

...and Wide World of Sports.

That famous screen shot of that tumbling and potentially doomed skier while Gowdy announces "....and the agony of defeat."

His passing brings back many memories. He is and will always be missed.

Those two stations only came in if the weather was right. There was no changing in between either, you had to move the antenna on the roof in the right direction first.

You saw kids outside a lot more then than today. I had a .22 when I was 9 and a 20 ga. when I turned 11. I lived on a livestock farm so there was something to do.

When the TV was on it was usually for a sporting event. I always thought Curt Gowdy had class, no matter what he was announcing.

M.T.,

You make me feel spoiled! We had 3 stations. Of course, the third was when we rotated the antenna to the south and picked up the station out of Mason City, Ia. Now there was broadcasting on the edge!

I remember the Gowdy show, definately classic.

I drive by the sign for Curt Gowdy State Park every time I go fishing at Glendo Res. in Wyoming.

M.D.

Semi unrelated trivia: remember that guy at the intro to the Wide World of Sports that fell off the ski jump ramp?
He was uninjured, believe it or not.

I remember that bit of trivia, Jack. I also stand corrected on my statement about Curt, he was NOT the WWoS guy as I thought, that was Jim McKay. I can only imagine that I was confused and associated Gowdy with this program probably because the Amer. Sportsmn was on right after or something. I could have sworn he was involved with that show in some way. I'm losin' it!
