Found ya an article.
CLICK HERE A caution: Paco's loads are quite warm. OK, they're downright HOT! His reasoning is that book loads for the 358 Win are limited to pressures not much above those of the 35 Rem, whereas every other round based on the 308 case (as the 358 is) is loaded to 308 pressure specs. When the 358 is stoked to 308 pressures, it equals the 35 Whelen and is neck-and-neck with the 375 H&H!

Rocky, I'm pleased to note you used the word 'reasoning' instead of the word 'logic'
I tried some of Paco Kelly's loads in the 375 Winchester- well, I worked up towards them, anyway I couldn't get anywhere near the loads he used without encountering pressure signs. Barreledaction, I'd advise you to work up very carefully if you use Paco's data. BTW, Speer makes a 180 .358 rifle bullet, so they should have some data on their website or in their manual.

Good luck! |

I definitely agree with Rocky on Paco Kelly's load data, not just for the .358 Win., but for the .35 Whelen as well. However, I haven't done much witht he .358 Win. so far, ut I did work up to Mr. Kelly's 250 gr. load in the .35 Whelen using H-335. I saw no pressure signs upon reaching his max load in three different rifles chambered to the Whelen using 250 gr. Speer Hot-cores and 250 gr. Hornady spire points and round nosed bullets. Velocity was close to, or a bit over 2550 FPS for all three bullets as I recall.
I don't necessarily agree that the .358 is loaded closer to .35 Rem. than .308 levels, but I do feel as Mr. Kelly does that it, and the .35 Whelen are not loaded to their full potential and can be improved by careful handloading. Even left alone, the .358 is still a darn good, if under appreciated hunting cartridge. The funny thing is, those that get one and try it on game find out what a eally fine round it is. It's even better when properly handloaded. Paul B. |

I was given this load along with another some time back but have not yet tried either. They may, or may not be, what you are looking for. The first is, 47 gns RL10X, 200 gn bullet, 2605 fps/ 20" bbl. The second is, 48.5 RL10X, 180 gn bullet, 2700fps/ 20" bbl. I would presume these to be max until proven otherwise and proceed accordingly. Have fun and I hope they work out.

Those loads with RL 10 are the same as what I had worked up in a 99 Savage. My velocities were just a little higher no doubt due to the longer 22" barrel.
I used to use IMR 4198 with the 180's and 3031 with 200's but now have switched to RL 10 for those bullets. |
