Shotshell question.
The difference between these two shells both by remington appears to be weight/velocity. I am wondering if the ShurShot Heavy dove load might not be a better load for squirrel than the standard game load.
20 Gauge Lead Game Load Shotshell, 2-3/4" Shell, #6 Shot, 7/8 oz., 1225 fps, 25 Rounds Per Box 20 Gauge ShurShot Heavy Dove Load Shotshell, 2-3/4" Shell, #6 Shot, 1 oz., 1165 fps, 25 Rounds Per Box Any ideas/opinions? (Spring season is comming up and I am thinking about buying me a new case of shells for the heck of it.) GoodOlBoy

The only way is to pattern each thru your shotgun of choice and see.
Was the FPS on the boxes ? Remington club and game loads I've seen in 3/4 are going 1290 with 1 oz going at either 1250 or 1275 |

I wouldn`t shoot eather. In my oppenion 6`s are to small for squirrel. If I carry a shotgun it will have eather 5 or 4 shot in it.

i too have always shot 5 or 4 for squirrels but since that aint the question here my thought, are you killing them dead now, if so hunting equipment has taught me dont fix something thats not broken. with squirrels and 6 shot i would go for the lighter load i suppose, speed kills and its less itsy bitsy pellets to pick out of the food
kt actually for me im usually shooting the cheapest thing that gets the job done! |

well thats the problem. My old #6's that are more than 10 years old of the same brand and type kill them dead no questions asked. The new boxes have been knocking them out of the trees and the run off. I had also posted this under small game and got some good answers there too.
The reason I use #6 is because my game is about 50/50 cat squirrel/fox squirrel #5s do ok but are harder to find than hobby horse droppin's around here. #4's are just to danged big for cat squirrel. GoodOlBoy

In my opinion and experience, the BEST squirrel load is the "FIOCCHI GOLDEN PHEASANT" 12 gauge 1 3/8 oz. of copper-plated #5's. They are a bit more expensive than WAL-Mart's, and harder to find - but worth the difficulty.
Cabela's and BassPro usually have them in the fall. I buy several boxes at a time. |

We can't really get squat in our wal-marts in the way of shells anymore anyways. I am going to have to head to an academy to get a case for spring season unless I want lo brass #8 target loads. . . . .

The best shell I ever used on squirrels was Winchester AA skeet loads in #8's out of my old full choked Ithica Model 66 super single. Knocked them dead out of the top of big old trees.
Of course this was a while back and shells just aren't the same any more. |
