MIAMI -- It's a sure sign of spring in South Florida when alligators start showing up in backyards and parking lots. That's because spring is the beginning of alligator mating season.

One seven-foot gator made his spring debut in the Fresca Farms parking lot in Miami on Saturday.

It took awhile, but some Miami police officers were finally able to get a rope around the gator's mouth. At one point, they had to grab its tail and pull it out from under a car.

Finally, one brave officer put a rag over the gator's eyes while another officer taped its mouth shut.

"(I haven't done this before) but I've seen it on Animal Planet, and it looked fairly simple and it worked," Officer Robert Ramoz said.

Miami police said the gator would be taken to a wildlife preserve.

Miami police said they've seen a surge in complaints about alligators in recent days.

The problem is expected to last another 12 weeks until the alligator mating season ends.
