Let me first say that the 22lr is not my first choice for shooting anything larger than a Racoon. Now that being said I have shot several yotes with a 22lr and I have dispathched a few of the several that I shot but never with a heart lung shot. Mine have always been head shots, always less than 30 yards. I have also bounced 22lr slugs off the skulls of three coyotes. I would never take a heart lung shot at a coyote with anything less than a 22 Hornet. The 22lr may kill it in an hour or two, day or two it may kill it on the spot but why take the chance! I'm sure that you have shot squirrels that weigh less than 2 pounds that did not die on the spot with your 22lr. So why would you intentionally go after a coyote that on the light side weighs ten times that of the the squirrel and may weigh 25 times as much? No... give the animal some respect and use a larger weapon to hunt coyotes with.

I have to go a step beyond what kirkned said. A .22 LR is not enough gun for coyote, period.
Yes, you can kill one with it - but as kirkned says, you may never find the animal. The ONLY acceptable time to shoot coyote with a .22 LR is if the coyote is caught in a foot trap and you need to kill it to collect the fur. Even then, I'd want to be within 10 feet of the animal and I'd wait until I got the perfect shot - direct side view, bullet placed between the eye and ear.

22lr perhaps not but with a good 22 mag then i would have to say yes but at a reasonable range to ensure a good shot with a proper bullet. a 22 mag with neutralize beavers at 120 yds like you wouldn't believe. are you coyote hunting, trapping, or just in case you need for self defense against one? my personal opinion is a good shot with a 22lr at no further that 50yds can cleanly kill a yote but do not try a heart/lung shot b/c they will run and suffer too long. if you are trapping then yes a point blank shot for mercy will do the job. for protection while you are squirrel hunting then i say yes but as with all creatures i would avoid yotes if they pose you no harm. just my 2 cents

With premium ammo - alot of prarie dogs won't get "anchored with one shot out of a .22lr . Sure you could kill a coyote with one . But you'll probablly wound several before you get a kill .

I once shot a yote sized dog with a 22.
I live in a subdivision outside of town where shooting is OK. A stray dog came around with a HUGE absess (grapfefruit or larger) on his neck where he had a piece of rope imbeded in his neck. It SMELLED TERRIABLE! And looked worse. The neighborhood had a lot of small kids, and we were concerned that one of the kids would touch the dog and get bit. Animal control set out traps but were unsucessfull. Calling the dog close enough to capture failed. I was home for lunch, smelled then saw the dog. I got my trusty Marlin 39M (Mountie version) wnd loaded it up with 22HP's. Range was about 70 yards. I fired from by back door supported aginst the door frame. The shot was deflected by a weed stalk. Instead of hitting him behind the ear (he was quartering away) it hit behind his jaw. He took off and I stood up and toow 5 rapid shots from standing. He dropped at about 90 yards. I approached him and he was dead. I had put 5 rounds in a fist sized cluster thru his chest, perfect for heart/lung. His absess had ruptured and was VILE. Yes, it will do the job. But it won't be pretty. I was sickened by having to shoot the dog and worse to blow the head shot.
