Need some help!

I'm new to this, This is gonna be my first year hunting. I have been a few times in the last couple of years. Can anyone give me advice on the type of deer rifle, I would need? I would really appreciate any info.

Welcome to HC Deerhunter06. Well, with such a broad question there are many possibilities for you. I'll keep it short and simple, bolt action, 30-06, scoped. There are many fine rifles out there today and a lot depends on what you plan on spending. Get a solid rifle, say a Rem 700, and get the most glass you can afford for it, say a Leopold 3-9x40. Caliber? 30-06 turned 100 this year and is a great caliber or it wouldn't have made it so long and be recognized around the world. Lots of other calibers good for whitetail, 270 is another great one. I wouldn't go any smaller on caliber, that combination will fill the freezer for you if you do your part, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

I don't think any more can be said beyond Dom's remarks. The .30-06 is it. I also have a .308, and a .30-30, which have brought down deer (back when I lived in Pennsylvania, that is; now I live in Ohio where shotguns and slugs are the law of the land). But the '06 will do it all, and well.

Welcome to the Forum. Dom answered your question the same as I would have. Shoot a box of ammo weekly at the range for a few weeks to get the feel of your rifle and scope. Good luck afield.

Could you tell us a bit more? For example, do you have any experience shooting?
And, if you know, what kind of area you'll be hunting in? Farmland or woods?

You can get a good used Marlin in 30-30 Winchester for a decent price just about anywhere. Shells are relatively inexpensive, and you can mount a scope eventually if you want to and try hornady's new zippy pointed ammo for it, or can use it the good old fashioned way with iron sights. See everybody else assumed you were hunting in large open areas with long shots. Being from the south I assumed you were going to be in brush.

Also Dom has the sage advice if you ARE hunting in open areas.

I have personally brought down deer with both a 30-06 and a 270 you cant go wrong with either gun make sure though you get the right gun for the type of hunting u will be doing if you are goin to just go in the trees i would go with a lever action or possible a semi auto. you could also go with the bolt action which is what i have shot like i said you cant go wrong with either the 30-06 or the 270

Welcome aboard deerhunter06.Dom hit it right on the head.I could'nt agree more,both the 270 or the 30-06 would be exellent
choises.Both are also good calibers if you ever get the invited on an elk hunt or for black bear.
Being a new hunter,you should find this forum very usefull.

So, are you a recoil sensitive person or an average joe? If you want to skip the recoil a 243 is a good caliber choice, and the 25-06 would work well too; for other average joe calibers it's hard to beat a 30-06. The rifle should probably be a bolt action due to accuracy, reliability, and simplicity. The most common action for gun hunters, by the way. Now a rifle to get this bolt action -06 or whatever caliber it might be in. Remington 700, Winchester 70, Ruger 77, and for a bargain without losing too much performance, the Savage 110. If you're a close range hunter(i.e. inside 150 or so yards) the lever action 30-30 in a marlin 336 would be a trusty gun to grab.

Remington 700 adl or bdl in 25.06 using 120 grain winchester positive expanding points.
Another option would be a Tikka T3 in 25.06 as well. Esox357.
