Do you mean that after you size the .30-30 cases in the 7-30 die, you get what looks like two shoulders - one just above the other?

Because that's perfectly normal. The 7-30 has a shorter neck (or has the shoulder blown forward - depending on how you look at it). When you fire them, you'll see the shoulder has formed perfectly. You'll also see a faint slight bright ring where the .30-03 shoulder used to be.

If that's not clear, I'll shoot a photo and post it later.

I don't have the photos with the original article, but here's the link to my page about the 7-30...LINK

You'll likely find better results with powders a bit slower. H335 will be fine, but H322 is a bit quick, especially for the 139-gr bullet. If you have some powders in the 4895/4064/Varget/4320 area they should be ideal.

What gun do you have, a lever or a single-shot?

Wonderful! That opens up the whole world of pointed bullets. I think you'll be delighted with the 120 Ballistic Tip for 90% of your hunting needs for deer and such. You can use a cheaper 120 softpoint for practice, a 110 hollowpoint for varmints, and a 139/140 for black bear.

But the cartridge was designed around 120-gr bullets, so that's where it will perform best. I still have some 139s and 140s left from when I wrote that article, but a whole bunch of 120s have gone down that tube in the meantime. I load 'em just as described above: 120 SPs for daily use and 120 Ballistic Tips for big game.

I told ya. That little booger is almost addictive. The power of a .30-30 with the recoil of a 357 mag. And more accurate than either.

Hey Guys my name is Benny and about 6 months ago I wanted a pistol to hunt with the rest of my hunting days to put a little exciment back in the hunt. I read a lot on the 7-30 Waters and read Rocky's reloading article on this gun. I purchased a super 16 and an older frame and ordered all the federal ammo one company had. Only 6 boxes for the brass and to zero my scope in. At a hundred yds this thing is about as accruate as my trusty 7mm Rem Mag. Set of bipods and no sand bags 5 shot groups stay under 1.5 inches with very few flyers. Now I'm ready to reload and I like the 139 Gr.interbond myself but after hearing Rocky's reply I may stick with the 120 vmax. I already have some winchester 748 that kept coming up in all my books rather often and was wondering if this powder is not as good as 4895 which was second best. If anyone has some insight please let me know and I will do likewise with the 748. I got it and may as well try it. thanks so much.

Benny Moses

Yup, 748 is great in the 7-30. Most of the powders in that medium-fast to medium bracket are great. Anything that works in the .30-30 or a tad slower will be good or better.

Thanks Rocky: You have helped me an awfully lot with your reloading room web page for the 7-30. I just registered on here last night. It's a good thing you have done and I truly appreciate someone like you just for a ? or 2. I do have a ? on finding data for a 7mm tc pro hunter listed. Love those .284"s. If you have the time to read it I would truly appreciate it.

Thanks so Much
Benny Moses

Benny, I am open at any and all times for questions. I may not always have a correct answer, but I'll always make one up! Seriously, I believe a writer owes his readers as much personal attention as he can give. Post on the forums or send me anprivate message or an email at any time.
