280 remington

I just returned from Namibia, Africa and shot Kudu, Gemsbok, springbuck, black wildebeast, and steenbuck, all with the 280. It performed beautifully. The only problem I found is that the PH had never heard of 280 caliber. The folks that sell ammunition in Mariental, Namibia had never heard of it either. So if you go to Africa bring plenty of bullets if you have a 280 remington. The 162 gr. Hornady interlock was devastating to the big plainsgame I shot. Lung shots did not run over 35 yds. Most whitetail deer run further than that with lung shots. I would take a 270 win next time just to be able to buy bullets easily. I personally like the 280 better but there is probably not much difference.

280

It just happens to be one of my favorites.
Remington caused a lot of confusion by changing it's name several times so folks were confusing it with 7mag. I handload, so ammo isn't an issue. It will do everything a 270 will do and then some; plus, with more selection and heavier bullets available.
Loaded with 140 gr Barnes TSX bullets to around 3000 fps, It is simply awesome!
Accurate, deep penetration with near total weight retention. This bullet delivers terminal performandce exceeding most conventional bullets that are 20 grains heavier.

The 280 Rem is simply the old 7mm-06 wildcat that was being used with great success long before Remington tagged their name onto it! It shoots flatter, and faster than the 30-06, and has a much better choice of bullets than the 270 Win, which is the sme cartridge, only using a .277" bullet, instead of a .284 of the 7mm! Both cartridges are 30-06 brass necked down to .277", and .284 respectively!

The 280 Rem is one of my all time favorites, and is a better cartridge than either the 30-06, or the 270 Win IMO, for the type of game all three were made for! The best bullet for the 280 is the 175 gr Nosler partition, pushed at around 2800 fps.with IMR 4831 powder It will absolutely flatten a Zebra, or wildebiest!
