I agree with it too. There have been several options given for not allowing the game to get to penalty kicks to end it. For instance, play until they drop with a golden goal (i.e., first to score wins) winning the game. Play two 15 minute halfs with both teams taking a player off the field every 4 or so minutes until both teams are down to 6 men including the goalie. That way, somebody will eventually break and the other team will score. Or play the same way as above, but with no time limit after both teams get down to 6 players. They play until somebody scores and then the game is over.

How can anyone think that a team game should be settled by one guy from each team. Hockey has gone that way too.

I say, after regular time ends, let them play until someone scores. Sudden death overtime is as exciting as it gets.

Of course, the real reason for "shoot outs" is so that the networks can predict the total length of a game. Many sports are having their rules and formats dictated to them by the money from TV networks. Major league sports of all kinds are no longer about the game or sportsmanship at all; it's all about the money.

Well let's get this correct. For one thing under the English language Football/soccer is not a sport but a game. At school we had games lessons not sports Sports are Horse racing Fishing hunting and shooting the others are games.

So who really cares how the daft game ends? the players are being paid fortunes yet the first time they are tackled they fall over in a way that could win an oscar Take a look at the GP bike racing for real sporting prowess Rossi has been racing wiht a broken wrist and Millandri a broken collerbone. Can you see one of the soccer poofs being able to do that?

I can't forget what Gallagher said about soccer: "Any sport that involves intentional contact between the ball and your head is dumb."

(Off Topic:In the corner of the cartoon page, I notice our good friends with the USFS and the Lib-council using Bambi to team up with Smokey to prevent forest fires.
Prescribed fire is good for deer, even the non-native red deer.
Not necessarily anti-hunting, just stupid.Hard to believe that so many of our problems with hunting and forest management come from damn cartoon characters.)

Back to soccer;it did contibute two positive items to the sports world:yellow cards ad soccer kicks to the popular sport of Japanese mixed martial arts.

I happened to catch the "end" of the world cup this year on a break from work. They were taking turns kicking the ball past each others goalie. The goalies' basically had a 50/50 chance of stopping the shot by commiting to one side or the other, the shooter basically had all the cards stacked for him. I've come to the conclusion that if this is as exciting as it gets, I'd rate it with a 13 inning, 0-0 baseball game ... do you want to go shooting?

Mil Dot, the goalie doesn't have a 50-50 change of stopping the ball if the shooter puts the ball in the right place. Taking a penalty kick is usually pretty easy, but sometimes the shooters do screw up. France hit the crossbar and that was all it took. In the 1994 World Cup final, Italy and Brazil were tied 1-1 and went to penalty kicks to decide it. Baggio shot over the crossbar and Italy lost the game.

In this World Cup quarter final between Portugal and England, Portugal's goalie Riccardo got his hand on 4 out of England's 5 shots and he saved 3 of the 5. Defending a penalty kick isn't simply about picking a corner and diving for it, but reading the penalty taker's body language a split second before he strikes the ball. The good goalies can tell which way a shot will be going based upon where the shooter's hips are. However, the good shooters try to keep their hips square so that the goalie cannot read where the shot will go.

I guess you need to understand a little about soccer to be able to enjoy a game. Kind of like my wife and her parents trying to follow the Tour de France with me. They have no idea what is going on, much less who is in first place on the stage and who is in first place in the overall GC classification. To put it into perspective with this board, most people who watch a hunting show have absolutely no idea what is going on and they think these hunters are just shooting birds and animals. They have no idea about all the work that goes into getting that animal. In some cases, they have no idea that the show is being filmed on a game ranch or preserve. Same goes for fishing shows. Most people that do not fish would find a fishing show about as boring as can be.

I don't think soccer is ever going to catch on big time in N. America until they find a way to increase the scoring. This would also cut down on the games that end in ties so maybe two problems would be cured at once.

I personally will never accept soccer until some of the candy a..es
stop their faking of injuries and taking dives so often. I realize all sports have injuries, but the world cup made me ill with its phonyness in terms of injuries. What a bunch of wimps. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

I have the answer to both the scoring issue and the phonyness issue. Make it illegal to slide tackle. Offensive players will find it easier to get around defenders, the scores will increase, and there will be less penalties/dives because there will not be as much contact without slide tackles.

The I suggest you take a good look at Rugby, not only is the scoring higer but it's fast and with plenty of contact without the costant dramatics and false acting like Football. Oh and the players don't wear several hundred pounds of padding unlike US style Football which is not Football at all as after all they don't kick the ball

Football (soccer) is a waste of space as far as I am concerned, US Football I don't kow much about but I would assume it's about on par with it for being a waste of time why anyone would get worked up about a group of men chasing a bag of wind around a field is beyond me
