Smoothbore Flintlock

I finally acquired a .54 smoothbore Green Mountain barrel for a decent price. It is a drop-in for a T/C Hawken and I look forward to working with it at the range. The former owner tried it with patched balls and decided he wanted to sell it. All the best...

First flintlock deer was taken with a 20 ga. tradegun. Wish I would have kept it.

Gil,

Is that a caplock or flintlock Green Mountain barrel? I visited the Green Mountain shop in Conway, NH on my last vacation.

I have a smoothbore .50 flintlock barrel for my .45 rifled T/C Hawken that is a fine small game barrel. Get some .54 wads and go try about 80 grains of 2F Goex and the charger set at 80 grains for #6 shot and use a top wad. Good shooting.

I got the same barrel last year...it's a tack driver with PRB's...took a 4 and an 8 pointer with it.

Throws an outstanding pattern at the 25yds I set it up for...going to try squirrels with in this October until deer season opens.

If I ever had to choose only one muzzleloader to keep, this would be it

I've got a 62 smoothbore arriving tomorrow from TVM, been waiting a year for it to be made. Looking forward to smoothbore shooting, any tips would be appreciated.

I also bought a .62cal GM Flint smoothbore drop in for a TC Hawken...had it jug choked full for turkey hunting...outstanding dense 40yd pattern.

Tried PRBs for deer hunting but because of the jug choke, it sprays PRBs...couldn't keep them all on a paper plate at 50yds no matter what combination of powder charges, patches, wads, that I tried...

So I ordered a second .62cal GM Flint smoothbore barrel, just arrived today...cleaned it tonight, going to the range at first light to sight it in with a PRB deer hunting load.

Welcome to the Forum, if I did not so say in the past.

In Massachussets, one must use a smoothbore barrel to hunt deer with patched roundball. That is how I bought my used .45 caliber rifled flinter T/C Hawken that came with the smooth .50 caliber barrel. I have .50 caliber Wonder Wads and like the 80 grains of 2F Goex and the same charger setting for shot for small game here in Richmond Township.

With the .62 caliber, you may be able to use 20 gauge plastic wads for your load development. The Lyman Black Powder Handbook discusses shotgun load development in smoothbores using modern plastic wads.
