bookNhunts emails

Keep an eye out everyone for these "bookNhunts emails.

Got one today, and the only places I post in that are hunting related are here and gunboards, so it's a user on one or the other.

as soon as my email was downloaded, i started getting lots of attempts to open active-x applications (mine are off by default, hence the error messages) in popup windows for no obvious reason.

started deleting and checking message, as soon as i deleted that one, the active-x warning stopped. Pulled it back from trash, they started again, reported it through spamcop, and sent it off for virus/trojan checking.

Keep your eyes open, it's either someone tryign to spread something, or possibly someone who's legit, but infected themselves. or simply somsone who's really lousy with active-x commands.
Never hurts to play it safe though, especially these days.

Thanks for the heads up. It was in my email account. Did as you said and deleted it. Definitely from somewhere on this site as I am not a member anywhere else.

It isn't necessarily a member here (and we do NOT sell our member list!)

But there are "mining" programs that harvest email addys from legitimate sites - often without knowledge or permission. It's so bad that if you've ever sent or received an email, you've likely been "collected." Ditto if you've ever ordered from a site like Cabela's or Midway where you posted an addy for order confirmation or signup.

The site itself is most probably innocent and unaware that it's been mined.

Report them to a spoof/spam site, delete them unread, and purge your delete file often.

Rocky I know you all don't sell/share email, this site isnt the problem at all.

I was mainly posting here to let people know about it, since while I did get the active-x warnings, most people will not because they are normally turned ON by default.
Mainly just giving everyone a headsup, but even so, four of us from one forum, getting hit with the same email, the same day is a little more than coincedenal, even if you figure a spammer sending bulk.

My email addy is listed openly both here and at my own website. I invite questions from readers all over the globe. So I'm an email scam magnet.

Just today, I've gotten 136 emails, and 134 of them were spamscam. I've been burned once and amused tens of thousands of times.

I expect that I'll be the first recipient of a scam email from the planet Zeptuk - which will announce that I can make a killing on stocks of a male enhancement, sex-boosting, income enhancing inheritance from the late Prince of Odsboggle.

Count your blessings.

Chuckle Rocky i know the feeling, I average roughly 80-200 spams a day, very few makes it to my personal inbox, most get to the trash or bulk folders.

With the filters and blockers i have on my end, as well as those in the ISP provided webmail i use, when a specifically targetted spam makes it to my personal inbox, instead of the bulk or trash folders, thats when it raises questions.

As well as reading the header, and backtracking the orignating, and passthrough IP's, with both sam spade, and spamcop gives me a pretty fair idea of where it came from, though that may well be a zombie computer.
