definition of hype
Well Ernesto has come and gone...as the norm, that illegal hit the coast, cost everbody a boatload of money and time, and has slipped thru....There has got to be a better way of determining what these storms are capable of...all I know is NOAA gets a boatload of money and they might as well stick their finger in the air!

Give them a little bit of a break, Val. It wasn't NOAA or the National Weather Service who were running aroung like Chicken Little - it was the media, as usual.
I've worked with reporters way too much, and here's how an interview usually goes... Reporter: "What's the worst thing that could happen in this situation?" Spokesman: "That's extremely unlikely to develop." Rep: "But what is it?" Spoke: "Well, we don't think that it's likely, but in the worst possible circumstances, it could be very severe." Reporter (on air, live): "Official sources today confirmed that this could turn into a mega-disaster!" Yes, that's really how it happens.

Maybe your right, I just researched some of the cost to the communities down here over this storm...its mind boggeling...actually its sickening....shelters, evacutaions from the keys, gas station lines, grocery stores, plus all the supplies brought in and on standby, plus the cost of the personell ...business closings...I could go on and on...what a mess, now the media is calling it a dry run, and people are more prepared...what a cluster you know what!!!seems to me...some heads need to roll, this storm or (lack of) did more damage to Floridians than you know......

HELLO!?!......... Is this thing on????
I still find it remarkable that post "Any big storm/disaster of the last 10 years", people who live in areas prone to "Natural Disasters", are still so unprepared!
I'm in Michigan...It snows here, sometimes...It snows allot! Guess what!?!? Sometime in the next 5-10 years....... Wait for it...... It's going to snow AGAIN! So, I'm prepared for it... People who live out west, where they have earthquakes......Might want to have a little look-see and figure out if they are prepared for a week or two without the luxury of food/electricity/water Etc. AND People who live where the little rain storms people like to call HURRICANES might want to do the same. Sometimes....it boggles the mind how short peoples memories are. The "Little" preparedness you do/have today, may save your A$$ tomorrow. Tall Shadow |

You have to understand most people are prepared, its the system that isnt....your right any fool who has been in hurricane country for any length of time needs to have their ducks in a row, most people do.....but there are many who dont have the luxury of storing 60 gallons of gas in one place...low income people who have to fight for diapers and baby formula that may or may not be available for any length of time, how about the business's who have to close because of Hurricane warnings....how about Evacuation of an entire county (The Keys) who are not residents, Hotels had to refund millions of dollars and kick guest out...homeowners who have gotten the dry you know what by insurance companies and still have blue tarps on their roofs! This is madness, school closings, courts and public offices....hey its not the average Joe you need to blame, its the system.... or the lack of any real technology or controls within...

Well val, as somone who lives down there, I know that you and your's are at least as well prepaired as you can afford to be...but the "New Orleans bunch" just kill me!
Let me quote a post (I think from here) that I wrote a little while after the last big batch of storms... Quote:
The point I was trying to make is that I my opinion, most poor people in this country are that way because they CHOOSE to be that way.....Now I know that there will be people who think of that as an asinine statement, but hear me out.... We live in what is undisputed THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD! Where opportunity is yours..IF! you are willing to work for it. We have so many FREE programs & educational opportunities available that People are literally Dieing to try to get into this country. Yet, for 10+ GENERATIONS the same people refuse to "Help Themselves".....At ALL!....I'm sorry, but that just doesn't cut it with me. The "Way Out" of poverty is right in front of them, on a golden platter,... Paid for by all of Us who ARE working to better ourselves & our kids future. I will be the first one to offer help to those who are trying, but need help...And I have. The "Others" can sit and whine about "Nobody Savin' Me!" I'm busy. Tall Shadow PS: I also think that the "Driveby Media" needs to get back to >FACTUAL REPORTING<! As was said above, and I can verify, News reporters/stations are all about the latest "Crisis!" not the news anymore (if the were ever "Just" about the news). The widespread Panic & it's ensuing chaos, is a direct result of their OVER HYPED coverage of last years storms...with a bunch of BS about this last one thrown in for good measure. |

Well said in my opinion Tall Shadow....Now watching shows of the last year disaster gets one to thinkin..First of all before my family had to be plucked from a rooftop because I don't have a car, we would have used one of those grocery buggies that are left all over the place, put our pets, kids, clothes, food in them and started walking to high ground. There has to be tons of jobs available in those areas..but can you get some off their porch to pitch in?..Now gripe also because someone crossed the border looking to do this work...yes issues in illegals not paying taxes etc...another post...but get off your duff and help out instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you....ok..so now you can't help your neighbor build his house when the red tape holds back the funds to buy the shingles, wood etc...after all that isn't cheap to buy...years ago, my family all chipped in with building a house for my grandfather...then when his was done..they all helped in building each others homes..soon...everyone had a home....not one of them sat on their porch and did nothing...another example is some neighbors of mine..I have worked on their house for their mother..free...worked on their cars...free and at times at my expense....but one day they asked me to put a new roof on their porch...when I asked if the boys would help....no ..I said no...so if you don't want to help yourself...how can you expect others to help you?....Now they say to move New Orleans up river..??...Don't someone already live there?...Where are they to go?....The answer to what to do with all the rubbish?...Make a wall along the shoreline with it and cover it over with dirt. This will help support the dam. We have landfills here that look like nice fields now..but I know what is under it....Japan has turned trash dumps into ski resorts..what a good idea to make out of the mountains of trash...ski down them...as for the news media..they don't care what they report..right or wrong information.long as they can say they are the first and the ratings go up...I hate to even watch it.....Kind of like headlines...truck crashes into school..well the first thing I would think of is some tractor trailer smashing into a school...but find out it was only a jeep pickup with a drunkin driver of a stolen vehicle....it is all wrong...in past posts on different subjects....the power of the voice of the people can get things done....in numbers...but who will get off their porch long enough to make the calls?...let someone else do it for you..
