Cities seizing personal property
Little firestorm this am...cities passing laws to confiscate citizens personal property for public use in case of emergencies....
notice the comment about firearms???????? Cooper City business owner John Sims owns two trucks, a 7,500-watt generator and chain saws. He said that despite the law, "I intend to not allow anyone on my property without a warrant. I'm going to use my equipment to protect my family prior to allowing the city to [take my equipment]." Under the city law, once the city declares a state of emergency, officials would be able to regulate fuel and alcohol sales, close any place of public assemblage and prohibit public possession or display of firearms. In addition, they would be able "to confiscate merchandise, equipment, vehicles or property needed to alleviate any emergency condition." Confiscated property would be returned within 30 days after an emergency ends. And the city must compensate an owner for using personal property, which would have to be returned in the same condition in which it was seized. Sunsentinel today:

Government is getting too big. First, the Supreme Court gives an opinion that enlarges eminent domain such that a state can take your house and sell it to a developer for a private building (i.e., not public works like parks, roads, dams, etc.), and now we have states passing laws that during an emergency situation, they can confiscate our guns and other emergency supplies that we purchased for just such an emergency. Sounds like a bunch of crap to me. If everybody else is unprepared for an emergency, then tough on them. The day I give up my guns or other emergency supplies during such an emergency situation, would be a cold day in hell.

Fabs, hit the nail right on the head.
Funny how when one prepares for an emergency, those that play all day benefit. Kind of like leaving your trailer hitch in your receiver of your truck. I use mine all the time so don't take it out but there is a law now in pa saying a $200 fine for doing so. Reason, if someone crashes into the back of my vehicle they won't do as much damage to their vehicle.... da... .what about me protecting my vehicle?..I had my motor-home parked next to a driveway that was used quite a bit for a turnaround by locals here. One punk school kid use to use my back bumper as his stop. Well one night I added my bike carrier to the bumper and it stuck out a few feet kind of like a table...He never seen it and never did it again after I listened to him busting out his headlights one morning...is how I found out who he was..lol..so kind of like the shoot, shovel, shutup thing..do what ya have to do anyhow...protect you and yours.

I find it Ironic that in an emergency such as a hurricane, especially a bad one, when people's homes are destroyed and vandels decide to raid everything in site, the city would even hint at the idea that they could confiscate a homeowners weapons...Its ludicrous to me when video of Katrina lowlifes were broadcast for the world to see...I mean lets look at this logically, if some poor excuse for a human being is breaking into a place and he is armed, his weapon would be confiscated no fuss, no muss, but if I am standing on my property protecting it from above lowlifes....you gonna tell me, that some cop who is in a bad mood is gonna take my firearm?????I dont think sooooooo

I've listened to some people (prepared people like most here) talk about what N.O. was like, how Un-civilized it quickly became....how many of them HAD to defend themselves, their loved ones, and their property. I've seen the (So called) N.O. Police, looting right along side the rest of the scum.... then, when the order is given, disarming law abiding citizens... I don't have to worry about hurricanes here in Michigan. Tornadoes, snow & ice....Week long power failures, crime, currption..Terrorists....Sure, but not hurricanes. But I will defend that/those that are mine. Is you aren't ready, you had better get going on getting ready soon....Things won't be looking great, if the Libs get back in office again soon!
