More funny history stuff....

Thought ya'll might enjoy some more bits from the Augusta co va court records....

NOVEMBER 13, 1769
(59) Called Court on Jacob, a slave for felony.--Not guilty of housebreaking, but of shooting at the children of Alexr. Moore--39 lashes.

Good Lordy...i laughed like a fool when i first read this...shootin at children??? He deserved them lashes...

JUNE 24, 1769.
(252) John Hill has leave to build a grist mill on his own land on Strumples Creek.

In the court records...esp. when the county was first formed in 1730 somethin....there are many references to men gettin a leave to build mills or roads. I dont know from what leave he left...but apparently they had to have permission to do such things back in the day.

JUNE 27, 1769.
(302) John Cockrain, son of John Cockrain, deed., to be bound to Hugh Allen, he teaching him the trade of a wheelwright and joiner.

There was alot of bondin too...most as apprentices to other men to learn trades.

NOVEMBER 18, l768.
(495) One panther skin attached.

Thought that was neat.

MARCH 22, 1768.
(131) Order for summoning Richard Murray and Catherine, his wife, late Catherine Highlands, for not bringing up the orphans of Henry Highlands in a Christianlike manner--dismissed

There is quite a few folks bein brought to court fer not raisin their children in a christianlike manner. Lord knows what they meant by that back then...but in my readin...some were dealt some lashes fer that offence.

MAY 17, 1768.
(133) Oyer and Terminer on Tom, a slave of Robt. Bratton--housebreaking and horse-stealing --Convicted-- lashes and ear cropped.

Croppin of the ears was normal practice back then. It was a permanent mark to warn folks of theives, esp when it applied to slaves. That practice went well into the middle 1800's too.
