Swaging or cutting military crimps?
How do you get rid of the pesky primer pocket crimp on military brass? Was thinking of using my primer pocket uniformer, if that would work, and save myself an extra step.

I don't believe the uniformer will work, as a uniformer generally cuts the depth of the primer pocket to a consistent measurement- the uniformer does all its cutting at the bottom of the primer pocket.
The miltary crimp is applied to the case head around the edges of the primer pocket, the purpose being to insure that the primer cannot come out and tie up a full auto firearm. What you may be able to use is your case mouth chamfering tool. Once the military case is decapped, use the chamfering tool on the primer pocket to cut a slight bevel at the mouth of the primer pocket (cutting away the metal intruded into the edge of the pocket by the crimp). If you only have a few primer pocket crimps to remove, the chamfering tool is what I use. If you have a good sized batch of military crimped cases to process, the RCBS primer pocket swager does a good job and is much faster, once you have it set up.

Jack has it, I've got both from RCBS. With large quantities, swaging is faster.

Another vote for swaging
The RCBS swager is great. All the best...

I must be getting senile. I was rooting around in my reloading cabinet tonite and lo and behold... an RCBS primer pocket swager.

I have a little bit for my re-charge drill, it came with Lyman case prep tools that will cut the crimp right out of a primer pocket. If I only had a few to do this would be my first choice. |

Classicvette63,
I prefer to use a swager because it makes a more uniform radius on the primer pocket than reaming with a C&D tool or other cutter. Adam
