I've drawn general tags in Wyoming 3 times, good for you.

Do you have a general area picked out ? As a non-resident there are some areas where you can't hunt without a guide.

Do you have horses, or access to horses ?

Now that you're drawn you'll be getting offers from outfitters, are you going on your own or would you consider a guide ?

Just some questions to help know where you're starting from.

I'm not sure I can help you much, because you being from Utah, I'm assuming that you will probably hunt over around the park somewhere and I have never hunted there for elk. Have hunted moose over there just east of Pinedale and did see a few elk while doing that. But like M.T. said alot of that area is Wilderness and you do have to have a guide when you hunt them. I have hunted area 37 and 36 and have seen alot of elk there, but anymore a lot of that is Wilderness so you would have the same problem there too. Anyway congrats on the drawing and I hope you have all the luck in the world.
Two things if you archery hunt don't forget your archery license and if you hunt around the park watch for bears. Have fun.

Wilderness & Non-residents

1st, Congrats on the tag!

FYI, All non-residents MUST have a licenced or G&F approved resident approved guide employed by a licenced outfitter while they are hunting in wilderness. This G&F rule has been upheld by WY's supreme Court as legal.

Guides must be working directly for a WY licenced outfitter, they cannot freelance.

If you employ an unlicensed outfitter or guide you are subject to arrest and liable for stiff fines when (not if) convicted.

Now that being said, Where do ya want ta hunt?
My recommendation is ta stay the he!! away from the areas with good populations of wolves, they're eatin all the elk anyway!

I've hunted on the wilderness areas that require a guide so I'm afraid I won't be of much help.

With your mobility, you'll be able to cover a lot of area. I'd have to suggest contacting the Dept. of Game & Fish or the biologists, there should be some information coming with your license on how to contact them.

Be sure to check with the Forestry Service as well. Once you decide on an area, get one of their maps. Then ask who is in charge of the area. Their service people are in the field all the time and can possibly suggest where they've been seeing Elk during the fall months. Also call the WY G&F and ask who's the Warden(s) for that area. Give them a call. I have found them to be friendly and very helpful. It wouldn't hurt to advise them when and where your camping, just in case. I suggest taking a good GPS and if possible a satellite phone. Good hunting, grayghost

elk area

Take a look at 85 SW of Jackson.
I've hunted there on a WY general.

There's access to national forest trailheads via a road S outta Wilson. Or you can access it via WY 22 Teton Pass east outta UT.

I hunted the Swift Creek drainage, didn't get anything but saw a bunch. 85 opens Sept 25 for gun, which would be an Aug 25 opener for Bows
