Where to get .22 cal Varmint Bullets? HELP NEEDED!

Hello All!
I'm at (past it actually!) the point that I was planing to buy the bullets for My trip out to S.D. for a prairie dog shoot this summer.

The problem is that I'm finding it difficult to find any good .22 cal varmint bullets!

I was hoping to use 50gn-55gn v-max's in both my .223 & my 22-250, but the places I've found them, they have either jumped way up in price, or the ones I have found with a good price are out of stock.

I've even looked at the Speer TNT bullets, but again good price = out of stock, or $$Big Bucks$$= in stock.....

I've been eying the "House brands" from Midway & Midwest ,but they are "soft points" and I'm not sure if they would work well on prairie Rats or not.

I'm looking to buy 2k-3k for the trip...and Time is ticking away!

HELP!

Tall Shadow

Not good news for you, my friend. Prices went sky high recently, due to metals prices, especially copper.

Those softpoints will be fine. Buy what you need, and just swallow hard at the price.

How much do you actually save by buying the cheap bullets? How does that compare to the total cost of doing the shooting you intend to do? I bet it's not very significant in that comparison.

For prairie dogs, accuracy is far more important to me than a few cents per bullet. If I can't hit them, whatever bullet I used was a complete waste of money.

Buy whatever shoots well, and have some fun.

I think I have shopped them all, online, local big outdoor outlets and the rest. You ...my friend are pretty much stuck. You have to pay to play. There is no magic cheap place. At least not in my world.
With that said, based on the fact that you are considering 3000 pcs. ....I thinkin "group buy" might cut the cost significantly. I'd be in for 1500 50 gr. Vmaxs.

I wish I had known you all were wanting V-maxs, I just sold a couple hundred on E-bay. When I first started loading a few years ago I bought several hundred but over time found other lead I liked better and with the recent jump in prices decided it might be a good time to move some stuff I had bought and then didn't like or load.

I have finally settled (currently for now at least) on MidwayUSA's Dogtown bullets. The are pretty inexpensive at $9.99 a box, and about every other month they have them on sale for $8.99. The shoot well through my CZ .223, my AR, a friends Remington 700 and H & R, and my .22-250.

These are one of the "Soft Point" bullets that I was/am looking at.....

What I need to know, is how well they (or any other soft point) works on Prairie Dogs????

Or should I stick to a varmint/hollow point???

I know that prices have jumped lately (that stinks!) but I was hoping that someone had a line on some somewhere!?!?!?!

Otherwise, like it or not I need to start buying!

Thanks Everyone!!!!!

I think softpoints are a little bit better than hollowpoints, actually. They seem to be more consistent in their expansion. Some hollowpoints expand violently, as intended, but some don't. Softies always do.

Dogtown bullets are just fine.

Thanks Rocky!
As usual, I learn something (at least, a little something) new every time I visit here. It's thanks to folks like you, and the other wonderful people here, that I keep coming back.

Thank You!

I'll try the soft points out on some P-Dogs this summer!
