When I did an image search, I got the French flag. When I just googled French I got wikipedia.

Now I feel like I'm missing something.

First image was the French flag. The next one involved a spider and a scorpion.

Okay, just to note that what the French think is appropriate doesn't mean that it is appropriate for the US. They let Hitler march right into France without hardly a fight. That wouldn't be appropriate here.

In Italy, nudity is shown on TV like it is nothing. Granted, in the US they are starting to use profanity a lot on TV. I was watching Ugly Betty, an 8:00 pm show, last Wednesday and the "B" word was used twice in the show, when it really didn't add anything to the show. It irritates me.

Is AIDS really that big of an epidemic anymore, other than in 3rd world countries? I know it is a terrible problem in Africa, with I think 25% of the population dying from it. It is utterly horrible over there, but is it really a problem in France?

Well, there is a rather large African population that live in France. Still I have to agree that is a weird public announcement.

European TV and nudity is no big deal, I mean, most of it is done tastefully on normal TV shows. It seems the US has the weird beliefs in that aspect, I mean, show a boob and all hexx breaks loose, yet they produce more 'stuff' than probably the rest of the world combined. Go figure . . . seems it's either one end of the extreme spectrum or the other, when in reality, if you used common sense there is nothing wrong with the middle ground for 99.9% of situations.

Another extreme, in Europe, if you do sue somebody, you will NOT be awarded millions, you will be awarded pain and suffering in common sense terms, i.e., what in reality was the issue, who was at fault, and how much money did you lose from your job, etc. The US awards unbelievable sums just to prove a point? That somebody was wrong or the manufacturer did not place 'this rat poison is not intended for human consumption' ok, I'm being a little sarcastic but you get the picture. Big deal, but absolutely no common sense, JMHO.

Well folks, I agree that the image isn't one for this audience. But TBO didn't post the image, only directions how to find it. So there's nothing I can delete except to wipe out the thread or edit his post into a blank.

My advice? forget it and let's move on.

Dom,

I will agree with you for the most part about the lawsuit issue for personal injury. Honestly, I think we need some serious tort reform in the US. However, some of the judgments handed out are for punitive damages to punish companies. While most of us don't like to think things like this happen, most companies do really stupid things. For instance, they might make baby pajamas that are not fire retardant because their study shows that in the long run it will be cheaper (i.e., more profitable to do so) because only X number of kids will catch on fire and each kid on average will be injuried to the degree of Y dollars, and it costs Z, which is a lot more than X times Y, to make the pajamas fire retardant.

I was actually thinking about this subject this morning while eating breakfast. A lot of people have no idea what goes on where these million dollar judgments are given out. For instance, most people think that the McDonald's coffee judgment was rather high, but when you look at the details of the case it doesn't seem that bad. The plaintiff got 3rd degree burns and McDonalds purposefully made the coffee that hot in all its restaurants so that it would take longer for people to drink it and less people would ask for refills, thereby reducing the amount of employee time used for refills and the amount of coffee used. I am all for taking an olive out of an airline salad to save $100,000 a year, but I think McDonalds could foresee somebody getting burned pretty badly with the coffee being as hot as they made it.

On the flip side, I had a client with soft tissue injury in an auto accident and she wanted $70,000 to settle the case. She wouldn't listen to me at first, and made me send out the demand letter in that amount. The adjuster wasn't all too happy about it. I ended up settling that case for $17,500. Yep, our Court system has some problems, but it is still pretty good. I think most of the problems come from there being too many attorneys needing work. They take stupid cases and try them on the prayer that the jury will award something big. If you get enough of those cases and try all of them, eventually you will get lucky I guess. Me, I stay away from that stuff.
