.28ga Flintlock Trap targets

Had an good shoot at the Trap range this morning, beautiful weather right at first light...same score as day before yesterday at 19x25, but this time with a reduced load of 1oz #8’s, and with more than half the shots from the normal Trap 16 yard line instead of from right behind the trap house where I shot from the other day because I used it's roof as a table.

Was surprised that it did as well as it did breaking birds at 40 yards considering the .54cal GM Flint smoothbore barrel is a .28ga with cylinder bore / no choke. And using the reduced shot charge and longer distance I didn’t dust any birds but they broke into several pieces indicating they were hit by multiple pellets and had enough mojo with the 60grn charge of Goex 3F to do the job.

So this .28ga Flint smoothbore should be great with #6’s on crows coming into a caller & Owl decoy at treetop level...probably bump the shot charge to 1+1/8 to get a few more of the larger #6's in there I use for crows.

The .62cal/.20ga GM Flint barrel I had 'Jug Choked' to "Full" by Lowell Tennyson in Iowa as my Turkey gun should be better for trap from regulation distances so I’ll give that a try next time and shoot everything from the 16 yard line.

Had another early bird trap shooter on an adjacent field walk over to see what all the smoke was about, explained everything to him, let him take a couple shots and he broke one of the targets...I think he’s still grinning.

Already has a .50cal TC Hawken caplock...asked a thousand questions about the Flintlock, where could he buy one, what did he need to get started, etc, etc...possibly a new Flintlock shooter in the making there !

Sounds good

I use a .54 GM smoothbore barrel, 60 grs. of FFFG, 28 gauge Winchester wads and 1 oz. of shot. It works well. All the best...

I was surprised this one does as well as it does without any plastic shotcups...just 60grns Goex 3F, two Oxyoke Wonderwads over powder, 1.0oz of 8s, and an OS card.

Going to take the Jug Choked .62cal/.20ga tomorrow and try the same load (.20ga wonderwads & OS cards of course)
