Looking For Out Of State Hunt

I know that it may be late in the year to try to plan an out of state hunt but my buddy and I are gonna try.Weve never hunted outside of Texas and know absolutley nothing about how to find info on this subject. Can any of you guys out there point me in the right direction, ive heard that lot of states require applying for permits but then ive heard that some states dont.Id like all comments and thoughts so i can see what i have to do to get this hunt off the ground.
Thanks in advance...........Mike

Well, you are right on a couple of points. First is, yes it is a little late in the season. Second is, yes some states still sell over the counter, although most of these will be doe tags, not all but most.
The first place you need to start is to fiqure which state you would like to try and then pick a second choice just in case they have no licenses left. I would contact the DNR departments of those states and see if there is a chance that you could draw what is called a left-over tag. Some states will still have some. You will need to fill out your application and still be able to get it to them by the time of that drawing. A lot of this can now be done over the internet, which makes it very handy. See if you can get the name of the local game warden for that area and talk to him about numbers of animals or the quality of animals (depending on what you are looking for). Some states you are required to have guides or outfitters, so you need to check on that. You need to make sure that your equipment is suitable for the terrain that you will be in. For example if you are hunting in the mountains in November you better be prepared for the climate.
I'm not sure if this is the type of information you were looking for or not, but that's where I would start. I wish you luck and I mean that sincerely.

As Colorado is 100% draw on deer tags, that kinda leaves you with OC elk tag. I too wish you luck.

As Dan mentioned, over the counter Elk tags are available for 2nd and 3rd season rifle. Usually, the second season starts around the third week of October. Right now if you hurry, WY has left over tags for Antelope and I think some Deer. You'll need to call them right away as they go on sale in a few days and will be gone in a week as a rule. Some States still offer applications until August, but mostly for Deer. Good hunting, grayghost
