gardening
well i have been watching the weather and see lots of bad weather and flooding we have had a dry year lakes are down.
I have been watering the garden almost every day and my garden looks good its hard to beleave the rain held me up on planting. I still dont have much comeing in but i wont complain if everthing comes in.

I'm carrying water pails to my garden in MN too. Rabbits got all my beets and most of the peas, my son thinks they'll be good eating when he hunts them down this fall.

After the drought last year I didn;t plant much this year. Figures. I could have raised a bumper crop of rice in my back yard. I surely do miss the home grown tomatos and cucumbers.

I cover my garden with grass clippings so I really don't have to water. What watering I do is from a bucket I keep next to the water heater, catching the overflow.
Last fall, I covered over all of my sections of garden but one with leaves and grass clippings. This spring the bare one was hardpan, the rest were almost too wet to till. Getting a bumper crop this year, from beets, peas, bush beans, pole beans, cayenne peppers, tomatos, lettuce, spinach, strawberries and cucumbers. The jury is still out on the carrots and corn.

Classic, I'm going to try the grass clippings next year. It's been too dry to get clippings off my own lawn and I don't dare use someone else's because they might spray and I wouldn't want any 2-4D residue on the garden.

My tomatoes are starting to turn red. Corn is starting to tassel already. Cucumbers are flowered and I'd expect to see those soon. Watermellon and cantalope are growing well also. Separate garden for pumpkins should produce about 50 or so for the kiddos from what I'm seeing already. I've got to admit I haven't put the heart into it much this year other than plow, disk, haer, and rotertill a couple times. My big gardern is about 20 yards by 10 yards. Little garden is 5 x 5 yards. The neighbor spread manure prior to me plowing and disking, then he spread lime afterwards (nice to have good neighbors). About the only thing that didn't come up was my peppers. Don't know the key to that yet...just put seeds in the ground and nothing grew. I had green peppers and 2 kinds of hot peppers. Even tomatoes I plated from seeds are growing good. I should have more than we'll need.
I also have 3 acres of sweet corn the neighbor planted on the back side of the property. I don't mind..keeps the deer close plus once my 6 rows of corn are gone, I have another place to pick it. I really haven't done much more than put a seed in the ground and watered during the first few hot weeks to get things started. My corn was waist high by the 4th of July...much better than the typical "knee high by the 4th of July" you always hear around these parts. When I get back from vacation at the end of the month I should be eating my own home grown. Probably tomatoes this week.

I'll eat my first ceremonial tomato tomorrow. Already had a few cukes.
My peas, lettuce, radishes and beets are long gone. It can be hard when you still get snowfall in mid-May, but by mid-June it's 100* and that snow was the last precip you'll get until September!

Ah man Rocky don't get me started on the cukes. I love home made pickles and a buddy of mine here at work made some Spicy Bread and Butter with everything that he could pull pulled from his garden (Cukes, Onions, etc). I think the first jar he gave me lasted almost an hour once I opened it.
