finally getting my new rifle
If anyone remembers a few months back I was trying to decide between a Rem 700 and a Savage VLP.
I had made my decision long ago, but the gun wasn't available. Well, I was able to place the order last Friday and should be receiving it in 3-4 days (Savage model 12 VLP .243). Now I have to decide on a scope. I've chosen Leupold as the manufacturer I want, but the model is a hard choice. It is down to a VX-III or VXL. Either one would be long range 4.5-14, and my preference is for a duplex recticle. I just can't decide. Any advice?? thanks |

Scopes for that rifle
Feather, I have a couple of the VXIII 4.5-14 LR scopes from Leupold. They are really great scopes. Get the 40 MM obj. Most of what you are going to use it for will be bright day and the 40MM obj is closer to the bbl. A little less expensive also. I happen to have one in Varmint hunter Reticle and one Duplex. I really do like the VH reticle better. The 30 MM tube and side focus is kinda nice. Rings are a bit more expensive...but when spending 550-600 for a scope the 10buck extra for 30MM rings is no worry.

It really depends on how your going to be useing it. For just regular hunting I like the fine duplex. They are also great if your going to carry a drop chart and dial in your drop. If you want the ultimate, and your willing to only use 1 load then the blastic matched ratical is the way to go. Mil-dot, or a varmint ratical will also work, but you`ll probibly still have to carry a drop chart, at least for a while till you can rember what is what . Another thing my next new scope will have is side focous. Other wise, what Skeet said.

I have the VX-III 4.5-14x50 LR with mildot reticle and put that scope on my 243 VLP. Its working well.
I prefer the 50mm obj lens scopes myself (the 40mm's look tiny on a varmint gun) and would recommend the Tactical Milling Reticle from Leupold. If you are going to shoot long range at all, that is the way to go. It has 1/2 mil hash marks and 1 mil marks which will allow you to hold-over/under at specific distances for fast shooting. Also helps for windage holds too. My 6.5-20LR and 4.5-14LR with mildots are getting switched out by Leupold to the TMR which is what you could do later on if you don't have the cash to get it up front. Allen
