Ranger O/U Shotgun

I have an over/under shotgun that I purchased 30-35 years ago and I would like to learn more of it origin.

The only markings on the gun are on the breech end of the top barrel, and they are: "Ranger Over And Under". Below that: "16 Gauge Model 103-11". The serial # is: R 92xx.

I am convinced that the Ranger name is likely a "house brand" used by a retail store, i.e. Sears or Montgomery Wards. The gun is of reasonable quality, but given that I don't know its age I only fire target loads through it. It would be nice to know who made it, who retailed it, and the gun's approx age.

Any help you can give me in this matter would be appreciated.

The ranger was a house brand gun made for Sears I think by the Marlin gun company. I'll have to check my source material but i think I am right. Same as the Marlin M-90 O/U Ok guns especially if the earlier specimens as the design didn't fair well and was discontinued after Marlin experienced some problems with the gun..especially with the cost of fitting etc.

Further research has proven Skeet correct. My Ranger looks exactly like the Marlin Model 90 and it was apparently marketed by Sears. Thanks for your help.

I have sent a letter off to Marlin's Customer Service Dept asking for further info on their production of "Ranger" shotguns. When a reply is received, I'll post same for those who may be interested.

Marlin has confirmed "Ranger" to be a Sears trade name and that they manufactured the gun at the request of Sears. The deal was that Marlin could also manufacture the gun under the Marlin name - which ended-up being their Model 90. Sears model numbers started with 103 (i.e. Model 103-11).

M-90's were made from 1937-59, with a break in production between 1942-46 because of WWII. Marlin has no record of serial number/production dates and total production is unknown; though it is estimated to be less than 35,000. Model 90's were made in 12, 16 and 20 gauge, as well as 410 bore and some shotgun/rifle combos.

The Ranger name was used by Sears from 1937-41, but after the war Sears changed to the trade name "JC Higgins."

Marlin has stopped repairing any M-90's, as their inventory of parts is long gone.
