What should I do ?

I know I am probably jinxing it, but I am very optimistic about getting a government job in Oklahoma. But my dilemma is do I bring back my Savage .308 or just leave it here, it is under the German system, and can always stay in my safe for ever, and be here when I eventually come back.

It is zeroed with the same ammo I’ve been using in it for about 5years now (Remington Core-Lokt 150gr). But if the Demo’s win the election, I am afraid I couldn’t simply ‘check-em-in’ to fly it back here should I get another Germany assignment.

I am always drooling over a new rifle, and would really like to get my MR-7 back from a friend I sold it to in El Reno. And or a H&R/NEF Ultra in .30-06, it has always had me curious……………………..but the time and effort to get it ready, testing ammo, and deciding which scope. Not sure what the free time of a state side employee for Uncle Sugar, here I ain’t got time to do squat.

So advise me O'enlightened ones........................

Any excuse to purchase a new rifle is a valid reason .
Good luck on the new job.

I agree with jplonghunter.
I don`t know what it`s like now, but it wasn`t bad when I carreid 3 handgun home from Germany in Dec of 65. If your counting on going back you might want to leave it, but if thing change between now and then you would have an excuse to buy anothe rifle when you go back. OR maybe a nice Drilling.

IF YOU REALLY ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT FIREARM, YOU WILL FIND A WAY TO GET IT HERE! WORKING FOR THE GOV. I HAVE A FEELING YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND A LOOPHOLE? RATHER THAN POSTING A COMMENT HERE, CHECK WITH A LAWYER? GOOD LUCK!

Jon, which savage .308 is it?

If you look around abit they aren't too aweful hard to find here.

if it's a savage model 99, might take some extra looking, but they can still be found.

Gump.........it's a plain jane mod. 10 bolt action, with a SSS trigger I installed myself.

Gorilla 10..............getting it back to the US isn't the real issue, just some forms from the ATF, getting it back here to Germany is. When I flew out of DFW in '05 to Frankfurt, the TSA/Homeland Security didn't even give me a second thought, they just assured I had no live ammo and locks.
The airline however, was a horse of a different color ( story for later)

But I am truly scared Hillary will pull it off and get 1600 Pennsylvania AVE. Then every known pro-gun law will go out the door, along with the 2nd Amendment.

A lawyer with US and German legal knowledge would be easy four times the price of a Customized Kimber with a VX-III. And the Germans have no problem with the rifles any way, it's USAREUR (United States Army Europe), who is the big pain in the tookius. And a German civil lawyer has little impact with USAREUR, that all shapes up with the US 'SOFA' rules (Status of Forces Agreement).

The Germans asked the US to follow the German laws of license and regristration, the US Forces here added a few extra steps, which (by the way a few steps too far for the Germans) make it very difficult. I am okay because I have had these weapons in the German system 12 years before I started working for Uncle Sugar.

RATHER THAN POSTING A COMMENT HERE,
I post every question about weapons, optics, ammo, hunting and travel, BBQ, grits and beer (Mmmmmmm....beeer!) with HC. These guys and gals are my life line, and everyone here is happy to help and are a huge sea of good free friendly information And a good way to meet other hunters. When I eventually get a posting in Oklahoma, me and Gump are gonna meet up and critque a German resturant near Moore Oklahoma (I'm buying Gump!).

Jon

I don't like posting negatively but if I were you I would leave things the way they are.

All my doings with the Military as far as the 2nd Amendment have been totally negative. The military and especially the Air force Security forces are totally ANTI GUN. Period. Only the police should be allowed to have firearms according to them or at least the ones I was forced to do business with.

When I lived on Base all my firearms had to be registered. No if's, ands, fors, nors, or butts. Second Amendment doesn't apply no Air Force bases. You are a suspected as a terrorist. What do you need guns for, we protect you. My Parents and Grand-parents heard that BS when they lived in Germany.

I would leave that firearm in Germany. Period. You can always pick up something here. If ya get in a pinch I'll loan ya some of mine. I'm covered from 17 thru 458 Win Mag. And duplicates in some of those calibers.

USAREUR is a Pain in the A$$. They always over engineer everything no doubt about that.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Best wishes, Bill
