Handyman

Tip to copper wire thieves: Not the live ones
10,000-volt shock leaves cable thief to be ID’d by prints from severed hand

BERLIN - A thief in Germany was charred beyond recognition by a 10,000-volt electric shock when he tried to steal a live copper cable, authorities said Monday.

Police in the western city of Duisburg found the 32-year-old man's blackened remains by a set of cable cutters and a pile of cables he had already stolen.

Only because one of his hands survived incineration were officers able to identify the man as a German of Kazakh origin.

"His fingerprints were already logged on police files," a local police spokesman said. "The force of the shock was so great that the hand was severed from his body."

This has been going on quite a bit lately. The Detroit area has had 6 deaths this summer from people stealing wire from poles. The problem has reached the point one senator wants to force scrap dealers to be monitored by the state.

Yep,
We have a family around here that is famous for stuff like that. One son threw a chain over a power line..... a flash of light and one less son. The daddy ran over his self with his harrow pulled by his tractor, one less daddy. One son was arrested while pulling copper pipe out of a house with a pick up and a logging chain. Then another was picking up brass on the range when a 20mm case hit him in the head, after it fell from a aircraft that was strafing the range at the time !!!!! Their gene pool has now cleared up pretty good. All of the adult males are dead or in prison.

Arapahoe Sheriff is looking for a severe burn victim......cut fence into a substation, cut wrong wire...left behind a melted
pair of bolt cutters and a scorched glove. I'm kinda hard nose....poetic justice.

We were talking about this copper wire theft stuff last week while shooting. I couldn't believe what these police officers were telling me, but I guess it is true and it is a world wife problem. Pretty sad that thieves are stealing wire from public utilities and homes, and that they are stealing copper pipe out of homes. I cannot imagine how much damage is caused to a home when they rip out copper pipe. I can only imagine that they are kind enough to turn off the water before ripping the pipes out. Yeah right. I have no sympathy for these people.
