Saskatchewan goose hunt

Just got back from Saskatchewan, haven't even cleaned my gun yet.

I always wanted to go on a goose hunt in Canada and this year I did with 3 other buddies that I hunt with a lot. We didn't hit the best year, it's been in the 60's and even 70 the last couple weeks and it's just not bringing down the big Canadas and Mallards. The locals have been hunted for 5 weeks and are pretty cagey.

The first day we set up for Canada geese and saw very few, we got 7. It was a bluebird day and we got sun burned

The second day we set a big spread of snows & blues, 700 full body decoys. I think we got around 30 or 35. It was a hot still day and not the best conditions.

The third day we set up for Canadas again and had a better day. The four of us got our limit of dark geese, 21 honkers and 11 speckle bellies. It was a cooler day with some breeze. These were the first big Canadas they've seen in the area.

It wasn't the best hunting, but we did see an awful lot of birds. Migration hunts are tough to time when you plan them a year in advance. I learned a lot and had a good time.

Hello Toxic, we covered a lot of ground in Saskatchewan. We stayed in Herscel and hunted mostly to the west. There were thousands upon thousands of snow geese. I saw flocks that were so thick you couldn't see through them, it was unreal. The trouble is they're hard to hunt, especially when it's really sunny & still.

I had a friend hunting the NE part of the province a couple weeks ago and they had a great time, they were hunting locals in their home turf and took the season to them. Down where we were it's more of a staging area and they need to wait for the big Canadas and Mallards to come down, this is a late fall and they're just not down in large numbers yet.

I hope I get to do it again. The people I met in Saskatchewan were absolutely fantastic, thank you all.

Too bad you were not a little further north (about 2.5-3hrs) I would have bought you the coffee, and tried to hook you up for some canadians (geese that is)..

Maybe next time...
