Who likes the S&W M27 .357?
I like the 6-inch Model 27 Smith and got an OLD one for my birthday. Ok, I do not age another year until early December, but the wife found one for sale and it now reposes in the vault.
Long ago, when I was a town cop who had to buy his duty gun, I bought a M28 4-inch Smith and carried it on duty. I later used that M28 in PPC events and liked it very much. The M27 is the polished and slicked up version of the Smith .357 N frame guns and I was on the lookout for one. I like my gift very much and it shoots better than I can hold with my cast bullet reloads. The new S&W guns with the frame-mounted firing pins remind me too much of Ruger GP 100s. I am set in my ways and like Old Smith revolvers and old Colt automatics. Who else likes the old guns? Adam

Adam, I am very fond of the 2 S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum's that I have. One is a nickle snub nose and the other is a 6" blued version. Those old guns just flat shoot.
When I have money burning a hole in my pocket, I would rather look for an old gun than a new one.

Classicvette63,
I agree with you, the OLD guns are demanding a premium price these days for very good reasons-the old time quality is not being made today. The M19 Smith is my favorite K-frame gun and I have the 2.5 inch, 4-inch and 6-inch that are among my favorites. I carried the 2.5-inch many days on duty. Adam

The 27 and 28 are real classic revolvers. A bit on the heavy side for all day belt wear, but great handguns.
I have a 6" 28 that I bought new in the mid 70's- it was my first centerfire handgun. I hate to think how many rounds I've put through it. I'll put a lot more through it, too.

I like the 27 very much
I happen to have a 27-2 with the wood case that I have had for years. Hardly ever shoot it though. I just missed one at an auction in Cody. They were selling it as i went in the door. Really nice condition 8 3/8" gun in the wood case. Sold for 300 bucks which was a steal. If I had been 3 minutes sooner I can guarantee ya it would have gone much higher. Ha d 3 1/2 incher as well as a 5 inch one that someone talked me out of way back yonder. Tupid to sell em for sure. I also had for a short time an all blue Colt SAA in 357. Only made 500 of 'em but that thing was an ear splitter. Even with ear plugs. Oh well...live and learn

Stoke it with 145 grain silver tips and away we go!!!!

As far as pistoles, I still have my M28 in 4", my M19 in 4" and my CCW 1911. The 28 will take heavy loads all day..the M19...lighter if on foot...just don't give it a steady diet of mag loads. .45 has many K rounds without a burp!

Classic Smiths and Colts
I scan the used gun counters at the gun shops I visit. You can still find decent some Smiths at reasonable prices, but you may have to do some serious looking. I found a 5-inch Model 27 that was like new, pinned and recessed.
The old Colts are much harder to find and command premium prices. I have not bought a new gun in decades. All the best... Gil |

I carried a 4" Model 28 from 61 to 67 and never noticed the weight. But then I was young. That was my issue gun, liked it so much I bought my own S&W 357 MAGNUM. It is a 5 screw pre model numbers S&W, has a 5" bbl. Bought it in about 63 with a tooled El Paso holster for $75, also got a full box and partial box of Rem. 158 gr. copper coated SW shells. Since then have picked up a K frame .38 sp., pre model 15, and a pre model 36. As one who went through the S&W factory Armours School for revovers years ago, I appreciate the older Smiths. Don't like the Bangor-Punta ones tho.

Never fired the m27, but a relitive had one of the M19's mentioned above.
I loved that little 4 inchers, but I still havent found oen to get for myself. When i have found oen for sale, it was either totally beatup, or WAY overpriced, but I am still keeping my eyes open for one. |

M-19
I have an older M-66 which is the 19 in stainless. Still in the box unfired. It is an earlier example with the stainless front sight also. Hard to see that sight in the sunlight. Also have a 586 in race gun form. I did a little work on the trigger and that sucker shoots. But with all the race gun features it is really heavy. I got the double action down to about 7 lbs with no misfires.

What is not to like about an old 27? There is this country bumpkin from just west of here that shoots one pretty good. Got to shoot with him in a pre FIPT qualifier in Mobile, AL. Jerry M is a class act all by himself. He makes folks think his 27 came right out of a magic box.

While the 27's and 28's are nice, their grip is too large for my hands, especially double-action. Years ago, I traded a 28 for a 19, that fit my grip/hand much better. Glad i did so.
As most know, the 28 holds up better to a diet of heavy .357 loads than the 19. However, I have no need to shoot many heavy loads, and mostly use moderate .38 SWC handloads. |

I don't have any N-frame .357s - just a 4-inch Model 19, a Model 58 and a 4-inch Model 57. I would like to get a Model 27, though, as well as another Model 29 - not the stainless 629 or the new full-lug versions. I like the .41 mg, in case you couldn't tell... I also have an old model Blackhawk in that caliber.

I have a 27-2. it has a 3 1/2" barrel. It's a great pistol. It shoots better than it's owner. I use it mainly as a woods gun when I'm just out bumming around. I even harvested a deer with it once using 180 gr Bullets. I like those Remington Rosebuds. I bought it just prior to Skeeter Skeltons untimely passing. I loved that guy and his stories. The one about Mama Mia was a stand out as far as I'm concerned. Best wishes, Bill |
