Shot my first round of skeet last night.

Well, I shot my first round of skeet last night after work. I think I did ok considering it was my first try. I shot 14 of 25.

I have a new to me (bought used) Remington 870 synthetic in 16Ga., and it had never been fired. It came from the factory with a Modified Choke. Well I think that I'll get a couple of new chokes after the first of the year.

I've been told that an Improved Cylinder will make it easier on the Trap/Skeet range. Untill I get one I guess that the Modified will have to do.

Me and that 870 both fired our first rounds of Skeet. "HAD MORE FUN THAN A THREE #*$%&**# GOAT!" Man what a blast.

Back in the 60's, we tried to get night skeet going at my gun club in Texas. Just couldn't get enough people to shoot the white tops (then)...it was fun but not enough shooters.

Fun, isn't it? And 14 is pretty good for a first time! Get into it, and you'll have a greay pasttime.

I have actual skeet chokes in my clay guns, and I use modified for trap. I know Remington has skeet Remchokes that you can purchase anywhere, or you can buy Remchoke equivalents from Carlson. Carlson has great prices, great selection, fast fulfillment, and good customer service (at least in my experience).

I've been a shooter all my life. From about 7 or 8 years old I was a dove, quail and deer hunter (killed my first deer at 7) up untill the time that I went into the Army.

Since I got out of the Army, I've been working on my rifles and handguns. Loading for both and shooting them as much as possible. Up until about 2 1/2 years ago when I had an emergancy by-pass I went shooting about once a week. Since that operation I've only been shooting a couple of times and I miss shooting alot. Before that I spent many a Saturday on the bench with my friends talking about shooting, firearms and loads between groups.

I enjoy that and will continue to enjoy it very much.

But shooting that one round of Skeet last night (just before dark)(and they do have lights for night shooting) was just plain fun'er than just about any kind of shooting I've ever done. I've watched it done and thought about it for years but didn't try it untill yesterday.

The reason is my oldest son (GoodOlBoy) got me thinking about shooting shotguns again and we've even been squirrel hunting recently (first time I've been in many years). Well he went and got a new Mossberg and that got me looking for another shotgun.

I found one in the pawn shop where I've bought most of my long guns. Used Remington 870 with a synthetic stock in 16Ga. (the 16Ga. is also a craving that my son also flung on me, he,he,he!)(I won't go into that here). I was looking for a new 20Ga. or as a secondary a 12Ga. new in the box. I just by accedent ask'd if they had anything in a 16Ga. and they pull out the 870. I checked it out and the bolt face showed that it had never been fired. "SOLD"

Now, I've gotten hooked on Skeet, after just one round. I'm going to take my Oldest Son (GoodOlBoy), my other two Sons and my Best Friend (Slim-Zippy) shooting Skeet also and see if they enjoy it as much as me.

Glad to hear that you had fun at skeet. I used to shoot a lot of it too, but then took up sporting clays. It is rather funny. My dad had taken me to shoot trap when I was a little boy, so that is all I knew. When I graduated undergrad, trap is what I started shooting and I was actually afraid to try skeet. Then, I started shooting skeet and was scared of 5 stand and sporting clays. Next came 5 stand, then came sporting clays. Now, I shoot any clays game possible, or just any clay in the air, period.

Honestly, I really prefer shooting clays over paper. Don't get me wrong, I love my rifles and handgun, but I just don't like shooting them at paper unless it is to check the zero before hunting. Even then, I don't love shooting them to check the zero.

Thanks for putting up the relationship between you and GoodOlBoy and Slim-Zippy. I never would have guessed, but I am going to make a mental note of it now.

Glad you 'found' another fun thing to do bulletpusher. Now with your new discovery, you'll have to change your handle to 'skeetpusher', Waidmannsheil, Dom.

P.S. If you're on, you're on, you can use full chokes for skeet, of course, we all open the chokes up to increase our chances when we're a tad off

I'll always injoy shooting teny tiny groups into a target at range. Its been with me my whole life.

But I do agree with you that busting clays that are moving as fast as they are in skeet, has an appeal that I've always wanted to try. A moving breaking (dusting) target is a funner thing than just about anything that I've ever shot.

Another friend got me to doing a few clays with a thrower about 10 years ago. They were all thrown straight out and left or right. I think he called it a poor mans trap shoot. Had fun doing that, completely informal, it was the first time and got me interested a little.

That was fun, but it didn't compare to shooting them skeets (pun intended). I think I will keep trying that for a few decades to come, maybe I'll even get gooder at it.

As for my relationship with GoodOlBoy and Slim-Zippy, well I wouldn't change a thing. You can't beat that kind of friend or family relationship for no amount of money or debt. What can I say my son is my son and I love him and am very proud of him. My best friend was introduced to me by another friend that is no longer with us. I would trust him with my life and my families lives and safety. What more can I say than that.

I think, I'll keep the "Bulletpusher", If'n you think about it a shotgun shell is still a cartridge and all of the little round balls inside are still bullets. What do you think about that.

Thanks for the replys, I've now found something else to open my big mouth about. At least here I can spout off and ask questions and get answers from all the guys and girls that know more than I do and have got the experience that I don't have yet.

Will just have to keep learning and having fun.

Naw not me never heard of it

Dad and I have been shooting together (mostly pistols and rifles) since I was very young. In my teenage years we first started hitting the ranges and did quite a bit more shooting that we did out on the farm. I love to shoot, in point of fact I probably like to shoot more than I do hunt.

Haven't tried skeet yet, but I will.

I remember my first round of skeet. Broke a 24.. Thought that it was the easiest game I had ever shot. Kept shootin and in a few weeks time I was all the way up to a 17. Knocked the cocky outta my head. I have shot a few rounds since then. It is a fun game. So is sporting clays. I can't really get into sporting for some reason. Mostly cause I like shooting the small gauges I guess. The 410 just doesn't quite make it in Sporting. The whole point of skeet in my opinion is to shoot better than the last time. Have fun with it..and get an open choke. You will break a few more...unless ya do like I did. Oh, if ya can, try a 20 ga too.

Sounds like you luck is like mine.

I figure that the next time if I bust more than 2 or 3 then I'm ahead. I'm not crazy enuff yet to think that 14 on the first try is a mean feat. I figure that all the years of shooting dove and quail, when I was younger, gave me a chance to hit some of them.

I mean, what the heck, anyone that had done it once already, had more knowledge about it than I did.

I'll just do the best that I can and see what happens. After I'm all not trying to beat anyone but me, that is untill I get GoodOlBoy and Slim-Zippy on the range, He He He!

If I don't shoot as many the next time then I've got a mark to shoot for and then beat.

When shooting a shotgun..don't listen to the guys saying lead this one two feet or that one 6 inches.. Your 2 ft may look like their 6 inches. There is a little ballistic computer up ther in your head 'tween your ears. Look at the bird. That is what you are shooting..Ya ain't shootin the gun Seriously it really works when ya trust that little computer up there(Well mine is little yers may not be!!)

Been a while now, but I used to shoot some skeet, as practice for upland bird hunting.
I think Skeet is exactly right- what I used to tell myself when I was having a lousy round is: 'stop thinking!' When I tried calculating lead and all that scientific crud, I couldn't hit my own foot. As soon as I quit thinking, and just concentrated on shooting the bird, I'd get better.
BTW, if you get to the point where you think you're good, try a few rounds with the gun at port arms until you see the bird- good practice for hunting. Shooting from station #8 that way will separate the quick from the slow.
Skeet's right about getting an open choke, too. I used a bird gun choked improved and modified- before the days of choke tubes. If I'd had choke tubes, I'd have used cylinder and improved, which is about what skeet #1 and skeet #2 chokes are.

Precisely! Same with me. It's hard to put in words, but if I quit thinking about what I'm "supposed to do" and just shoot, I do better. Kind of a Jedi/Zen/Chevy-Chase-in-Caddyshack oneness with the target.

Skeets really don't taste too good but they are fun to shoot. Skeet 1 is a light improved cylinder at about .003 to .004 constriction..skeet 2 is actually kind of a light modified at .010-.012. Meant for bird shootin but I coulda used 2 cylinders in my Win 21..I was kinda quick on the draw shootin quail. My Win 21 20 ga was made for a bird shooter and it was bored cylinder and light mod. Bird shootin gun for certain. Only bad thing was it only shot twice. On a covey rise I wanted 5 shots..even though they only let me load 3 in my M-12 or 1100.

And as far as looking at the bird. When teaching people to shoot back east. That is the way I taught ..mainly to women and non shooters. I would take an index card...cut it in half..cut a notch for the rib and tape it across the bbl. Couldn't look down the rib anyway but they found that by just lookin at the target..they could still hit it. I can literally put my chin on the top ot the stock and still hit the bird..just by lookin at it.. So can y'all

Skeet, I have no doubt that's true about not looking at the gun.
Where I used to shoot was a small club that wasn't very busy, if you went at the right time. You could go and load the machines yourself and trip the machines, too.
Once in a while when there weren't other people in the group, my Dad and I would shoot skeet from the hip. I won't tell ya we ever shot a 25, but we hit some- was lots of fun.
