Exotics: Mouflon Sheep, Fallow Deer, Red Stag and Aoudad
Took time off from chasing Whitetails this fall (took one at home and one in another State) and went to a friends ranch in Texas to hunt exotics. Made two trips: one in late October and another in early December. Tried to take an Aoudad but luck wasn't with me although my friend took a monster of a billy. I used a .280 Mark V synthetic pushing 160 grain Nosler Accubonds.

My 8x9 Red Stag. Of all the Red Deer I've ever seen, this one was the heaviest and quite massive. He was filmed in 2005 in a video called Dig and Roar. It is posted on huntingfootage.com

My friend Louis took his Stag on the same evening. We had to load his up in a Chevy 2500 and haul it out to where mine fell to get any pics. It was raining in a fine mist.

Louis also took a nice Axis Deer buck while watching two Whitetails bucks have at a pushing and shoving contest.

Thats looks like it would be fun and would sure like to try it in the future. I was in TX. awhile back but it was working with the FEMA stuff during Katrina and didn't get a chance to hunt.

Looks fun, something I've got to try.
I've heard that Axis deer are excellent eating, did you get a chance to try any of these animals yet ?

Hi M.T.,
Yes, the Mouflon tastes like any wild sheep. It is milder than Mutton but you still taste the lanolin taste. I recommend NEVER sawing Sheep bones. Instead, bone all of it out. This will keep the gamey taste down to a minimum. Fallow is good and the Red Stag or Red Deer is excellent. I prefer it to Elk. As for Axis Deer, I find it to be the best Deer venison found anywhere on earth. The only venison that compares is Pronghorn Antelope and certain African Antelope. Axis reminds me of prime fillet of mignon. Anyone that wishes details of this private Texas ranch can email me. We are all returning next year. Good hunting, grayghost

toxic, sorry I never read this post until today. I didn't have email notification set so I overlooked it. These hunts are:
Whitetail Deer: $1250-cull management (up to 135 B&C) $2500 136-150 $3500 151-160 $4500 161-169 $6000 170 up $7000 Mule Deer $2500 Must have non res Deer license ($300) Mouflon $1250 Axis $1500 Aoudad $2500 Red Deer/Stag: Hind $400 Stag (6x6 or better) $4000 Non res exotic license $45 They only take very few animals off this ranch each year and booking a year in advance is usually too late. We just took 2 Whitetails and 2 Aoudad. I will post mine in a new thread in this forum. Boarhunter: I agree, Axis is the best deer and Red Deer/Stag off this ranch beats any Elk I've eaten. I am looking forward to trying the Aoudad. Everyone says it is not good. I find that hard to believe. The meat did not smell and looked very fine. We shall see. Good hunting to you all, grayghost
