take anywhere camp oven
A camp oven allows you to cook any roasted meal that you can do at home. I made a tripod from conduit and the grill from an old Weber.
I rolled 4 tubes from chicken wire or 1/4 inch square mesh. The tube are 4 inches in diameter and 3 feet long (the width of the roll) The tubes are to hole the coals. I then wrap the 4 tubes in heavy aluminum foil to hold the heat in. Place your bird or your roast or loin on the grill with what ever side you need to cook and cover the top with foil. I stick a probe thermometer in the top of the foil. Add coals by tapping the sides of the tubes until the ash settles to make room for more coals.

Very cool. Looks lightweight and easy to pack into camp. How hot can you get it once it's all fired up, and how long does it take (on average) to cook a whole chicken?

Neat idea
Really is a neat idea..but around here by the time that sucker was done you'd have an ol grizz asittin there waitin fer it to be done...less'n he was real hungry. Then he wouldn't wait.

I'd like to figure out something portable but larger than a backpack stove that would cook stuff at an even temperature. For some reason I eat much better while camping and like to cook meals I'd never bother with at home-- maybe it's because I finally slow down and enjoy the scenery.
But it's not practical to haul in a full-sized bbq or even an hibachi when you're loading everything onto an ATV or a small boat. For the first night of camp I like the idea of grilled steak, and then after that, cooking fresh caught fish. But a campfire is hard to regulate, heat-wise. So while I wouldn't cook an entire chicken (sorry, fishdoggydog) if I knew how long it would take to cook one in Rancid Crabtree's camp oven I could do the limited math (which is about all I'm capable of) to figure out how l might cook up that perfect baked lake trout stuffed with fresh mushrooms and onions. |
