Question Remington 750 Woodsmaster

Good morning folks,

My brother called me last night asking me if I knew anything about the above autoloader from Remington. Apparently, he has an opportunity to pick up an almost new synthetic in a .308 carbine for $400 from a neighbor. He wants to use this for a close range woods gun where shots are no more than 50 yards on average. I have hunted by him and it is dense cover for sure. I'm a lever guy for close work so any practical knowledge on this would be helpful.

I called around some shops by me and new, these retail for around $550.00 so the $400 asking price-if it is in fact near new, doesn't sound too bad. I asked him why his neighbor is selling it and he didn't know but sounded like he was selling most of his collection because he needs the cash. I asked my brother to get a list of what else he is selling!

From what I could glean off of the internet, this gun has been redesigned by Remington from the 740. They appear to be hit and miss as far as cycling issues. Some people have reported no issues at all while others have had chronic problems. My opinion is that some folks that complain of problems with any type of autoloaders sometimes do not always keep their guns well cleaned and lubricated. I wonder if that is the case here as well.

In any event, any knowledge that I could pass along from first-hand use would be greatly appreciated. Worse case scenario, I told my brother to just find a good used lever (there are tons of them by me in the used gun racks) or if he is really hell-bent on an auto (sounds like he is kinda leaning that way to me ) that he look at another auto like the Browning Bar, which I don't believe has had many issues from what I have read.

Thanks for the feedback folks!

With any of the Rem. 740, 742, 7400 etc. semi autos you hae to make sure that the chamber is clean. Get a chamber brush for it and wipe out chamber after everytime used. Rem too cheap to chrome plate the chambers and that is where most of the jamming problems start. I'm with you though, get a good lever action, but keeping the 750 well maintained it will be a good gun.

I totally agree, you'd be amaized at the number of people that never heard of a chamber brush!

Thanks for the responses fellas. If it were myself, I would pick this rifle up in a heartbeat but I am very meticulous about my guns. After any range season or days spent afield, they are automatically cleaned and lubricated. While I love my brother dearly, he is a gun slob (rarely cleaning his firearms ) When I come down to visit him and his family, a day is typically set aside to do some plinking but in reality, after seeing the appalling condition of his firearms, I have spent more time cleaning them than actually shooting them!

Because of this, I am trying to disuade my brother from picking this (or any other autoloading rifle save the Benelli perhaps) because of his cleaning habits (or complete lack thereof)

I am amazed that he obtains the accuracy that he does in all honesty. He once asked me about getting into muzzleloading after shooting a couple of my rifles and I just laughed at him. I could only imagine black powder and seized breach plugs at his hands!

Update!

Well... it appears that my brother did buy the Remington 750 carbine semi-auto rifle this past weekend and it turns out that it is chambered not in .308 but 30-.06.

I personally think that he will be sorry from what I have read about this rifle combined with his personal firearms cleaning habits but hey, it's his money.
