rcbs x die

hi, I have a question about this thing. I recently bought a x die in 7mm/08 and set it up as per the instructions. It appears the decapping pin extends 7/16" from the bottom of the die. This seems pretty far to me (my redding pin only extends about an 1/8").
Does this seem right?
I called rcbs and a rep said it was but i'm not so sure she knew what i was talking about.
Also anyone have any experience or comments about this die?

I don`t think there`s a set amount of exposure for the pin. The object of the pin is to fully push out the spent primer, and not contact the inside of the case web while doing it. As long as both goals are met, I think your decapper is fine.

Yep, what Joe said. I have often set them so that they would just push out the primer and no more, but as a rule I just use them the was they are set when I get the dies, as long as they push out the old primer.

RCBS X-die

I'm glad you started this post about the X-die. I have one in 223 caliber and am currently accumulating cases to give it a try.

It didn't seem to work the first time I used it, so I humbled myself and consulted the instructions. Apparently, I didn't read them carefully. Fired cases should first be sized in your regular die the trimmed to length. The x-sizer die should then be adjusted to snug up against the case mouth. Next time the cases are fired, they can then be sized with the X-die. Does it work? I will find out before the end of 2008 and post a report.

Experience and inputs of other reloaders would be appreciated.
BTW: I agree that the protrusion of the decapping pin is not an issue.
