My significant other bought her first gun

JoAnn likes to shoot, has a CCW and wanted to buy a shotgun or rimfire rifle. We stopped at a local gun shop and scanned the used gun racks. We found a J.C. Higgins bolt action 20 gauge shotgun in excellent condition for $59.00. She did the Form #4473 and paid for it. I am proud of her. Take care...

Hate to bust her bubble, BUT, they had a recall on those guns years ago because the safty would not stay on. At one time they were paying $ 150 for the bolts, I don`t know if they still are. If she is going to carry it hunting tell her to keep checking the safty.

Great that she wanted to get a shotgun, but I don't know if I would recommend a bolt gun for a new shotgun shooter.

Bolt action shotgun

Catfish,
I checked on the previous J. C. Higgins recalls and according to two gun shops, the recall was on the Model 583.20 pump action shotgun made by High Standard. This bolt action shotgun was made by Harrington & Richardson.

Fabsroman,
JoAnn is used to shooting a bolt action .22 l.r. and is comfortable in using a bolt action shotgun. I think a new shotgun shooter can operate a bolt gun safely. Take care...

"JoAnn is used to shooting a bolt action .22 l.r. and is comfortable in using a bolt action shotgun."

I guess if she is comfortable using it, that is all that matters, and it is a good way to get her introduced to shotgunning.

However, she won't be making a quick double or triple on doves, teal, mallards, quails, etc. any time soon. I did kill 3 deer in one group with my bolt rifle, but the first one I shot when they stopped in the middle of a field, the next one I shot because she stopped to look back at the other one laying in the field right as the group was entering the woods, and the third one I shot when the group decided to come back out of the woods and into the field 100 yards further down.

What is she planning on using the shotgun for?

My significant other bought the bolt action shotgun for home defense and a bit of plinking. She has a .38 Model 36 Smith & Wesson. Take care...

That gun will work just fine for home defense and plinking. It will work just fine in the field too if doubles and triples aren't required. I hope she gets to use it often for plinking and hunting, not so much for home defense.
